Installing Vegas Pro 8 on Windows x64

Worth noting that the VP8 installer would not work on my copy of Windows x64.

It spent ages downloading two versions of the .NET v3 architecture, one x86 the other x64, and attempted to install the x86 version first. When that failed - OS not compatible error - the installer exited.

If it hasn't already been mentioned, the work-around is to go to Microsoft Update and download and install .NET v3 and any patches from there and then install Vegas Pro. That seems to do the trick.

That implies you are using Xp 64, and that you don't use MS updates very often... (don't take offence to that!)

With Vista installs, the .net3 is already part of it (or at least should be), and so it should install fine as is. But as with everything, it's almost always worth using MS updates - they're rather useful for most situations, except corporate, where they may need to test for in-house app conflicts.

You're not the first to suffer this problem, and I suspect not the last.

x64 indeed (as stated in title) and (no offence taken) on this machine Windows Update is set to automatic and the OS is always up-to-date with patches and such like. For some reason, .NET 3 wasn't already installed, perhaps it's an option from Windows Update rather than a critical patch.

Either way, it could be confusing for folk to sit and watch the VP8 installer go and download the x64 version of .NET 3 and then error out when trying to install it.

I forgot all about this. I was disappointed the Vegas 8 experience failed right out of the starting gate. I noticed it downloading the x86 version luckily too so I knew it was trying to install the wrong thing but you are right - a lot of people will be confused. The install fails on x64 if you don't have .NET 3 already installed. (and makes you download a lot of data you don't need and can't use!)

I know that in Vista64 there is an option in vista features (where you install/uninstall vista features) to turn .NET3 on or off. Maybe the same holds true for Windows64??

But then with Vista... .Net is preinstalled.
