Intel QSV preview performance

Hello everyone,

I wonder how good QSV is for video preview (src material varies from 480p to 1080p) vs RTX 4090. Is there any benchmark / comparison available? Does it improve responsiveness of the application vs dGPU?

Asking because I wonder if upgrading to Intel chip with QSV will increase responsiveness of Vegas (I'm on TR 3960x + 96GB CK 14-14-14-34 + RTX 4090).

And yes it obviously will increase performance as ST on new chips (be it 7950x, 14900k, new TR 7960x) is almost 80% of my Zen2 CPU but I do wonder if anyone compared i.e. Intel K vs KF (no iGPU) chips?

Thanks in advance

I'd highly recommend using Intel QSV as your decoder as it works with more formats and doesn't have some of the problems NVDEC shows in VEGAS with certain material (especially HEVC). You can search the forum for threads about this.

For two benchmarks with a preview component you can look at my signature. The biggest difference isn't decoding though, both use pretty easy to decode media.

You could also add an Intel ARC card just for decoding if you're happy with the rest of your system.

QSV / HEVC is challenging for editing decoders.

Software AVC / .h264 is easier relatively, but may still have problems at higher resolutions and frame rates.
