Interesting Problem

Okay, here is what I am attempting to do:

transfer old 4track master tapes to digital using a
standard tape deck and vegas audio.

Here is how I am doing it:

since the 4track tapes where recorded using 2x tape speed,
I armed my tape deck as if it were doing a high speed copy
(2x) and recorded to vegas side one of the demo

Then I flipped the tape over and recorded the other two
tracks to vegas, of course they were playing backwards.

Then I opened up the last two tracks in sound forge and
reversed them so they would be playing forward again.

Problem:

When I sync up tracks 3-4 with tracks 1-2 of the original
tape, tracks 3-4 eventually loose sync with tracks 1-2.
(Note: tracks 1-2 were recorded to vegas as a stereo pair
in one track. the same with 3-4)

When I sync them they start out together but then loose
sync within about 15 seconds and continue to get farther
and farther apart. I think this has something to do with
the physical tape medium (i.e. the take up wheel on the
cassette being larger and getting larger and the tape
progresses)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

P.S. I would hate to have to purchase an old 4track analog
unit just to restore these 4track masters!!! AHHHHHHH!
