Intermittent S key working

For example I have an event lasting about 90 seconds: way too long for my project. So I went through the clip slicing it into sections and I plan to remove intermediate sections to give an effect of progress. Before doing this I ran through the clip again and realised the opening section is way too long and tried splitting again.

VMS 8 Platinum refuses to do it. Tried several times: no go. Tried inching the frames back and forth: no. Save the project and reload it: still wont work.

The keyboard itself is fine as shown by this posting.

Trawled the forum but can’t find another reference to the problem. Is there a limit to the number of splits that a clip can maintain? Have I somehow turned the S-Key off? Is there a workaround?

Anyone else seen this one?

I'll tag along on this one as it intermittently happens to me.

But it seems to rectify itself if I place the indicator line in another place then go back and press S.

I have the same problem often but it's always 100% user error in my case...I keep forgetting to check what I actually have selected when I press "S".

Yes, make sure you have the clip selected, it's not enough to have the current play line on that clip.

I have to go with Sonata on this one. You need to make sure that the timeline is selected, anywhere else and it's a no go. Cin

Here's how "S" works:

If NOTHING is selected, it will split everything under the cursor

If EVERYTHING is selected, it will split everything under the cursor

If specific events are selected, the selected events under the cursor will be split

If specific events are selected but NONE are under the cursor, NOTHING will be split.

If you press "S" and nothing happens, just press CTRL-A - S and you'll get it split.

Thanks everyone for your timely offerings. Having spent many years professionally in computing I should have thought of “user error” first.

The vital point is making sure the event is selected. I overcame it by accident by removing the final segment of the clip, after that everything worked: but of course to do it I had selected the clip.

Particular thanks to Jetdv. His definition should go into a book of wise definitions for VMS!
