Is Deinterlace Broken in VP20/370?

ALO wrote on 3/28/2023, 8:55 AM

Working with some very old AVC 1080-60i footage, and when I put it in a progressive project and set clip media properties to either upper/lower/progressive with project properties deinterlace method set to "interpolate" -- the footage is still interlaced both in preview and render.

Am I forgetting something obvious here or is deinterlace broken in VP20?

Reason that you set/change the media properties?

Let it be as it be.

Vegas needs to know the properties of the original clip so it can interpolate correctly. If you change those properties from the original, then it will display incorrectly.

makes no difference. GPU on/off/auto makes no difference either

I don't believe anyone mentioned GPU. Did the read the responses?

Yes, it wasn't relevant.

Looks like this is happening only with footage from one specific camera. I've deinterlaced in photoshop so that solves the immediate problem. Maybe will send problematic clip to developers

Post it here to see if the issue can be replicated?

Ok, this is weird. It's not the camera.

If I drag the interlaced clip into an empty (new) timeline, it deinterlaces properly (I use "interpolate") when I switch project properties to progressive. But if I drag a GoPro 5K HEVC clip onto an empty timeline *first*, and then add my interlaced clip, it won't deinterlace. So looks like more HEVC Vegas woes here.

I'll play around with this some more and see if I can come up with something that will be easy to replicate

Edit: this also happens w/HEVC footage from my FX30, and 8-bit H264 from my RX100

If I understand you right:

1, the output field order has nothing to do to (source material) de-interlacing.

2, recommend you choose Blend fields so that you keep the source quality; with Interpolate fields you only get half resolution - if your project contains interlaced material, you must choose one of the two (forget that GPU smart nonsense).

After goPro 5k: ACDHD interlaced, DV-AVI

3, this is result of Interpolate:
