Is it possible to reverse a video clip?

Steviewonder wrote on 5/28/2002, 10:10 AM
I want a scene where a car pulls up and the wheel is straight up and down when it stops. I recorded the wheel straight up and down and then the car backing away, so I thought if I could just reverse this it would look perfect... I think I've been through every option there is... Maybe you can't do it in Vegas but is there another program that will reverse video? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Insert a video velocity envelope and drag it down to -100%.

How come it doesn't work ? I put a vel. env. to -100% and the clip actually plays just a little slower than it used to... I tried putting two more marks and BRING it down (to -100%) then back at 100% in the end of the clip instead of just dragging down the velocity line in the clip ... with no success... I prerendered, too, to see if it was just an "overload" situation... still no success ...

Works for me <g>. The velocity envelope should look like a horitonal line across the bottom of the event, and the envelope point should tooltip "-100%" on it when you hover the mouse over it. Works fine for me. You'll also need to have the event set to loop, or slip the media so it has something to play backwards *from*.

But how do I set it to "loop", is there a checkbox somewhere? And how do I slip the media, I don't quite get the idea....? I remember having done it successfully when I bought the software and tried it for the first week but now, seems that I'm getting dumber somehow...

Loop: right-click on event, Switches, Loop.

Slip: Alt+drag in contents of event, in this case, to the left. You can see the "start" frame at the left of the event.

Drag your mouse (holding the left button down) in an open area of the timeline (not over any events) and the loop area will be selected when you stop dragging. Make sure the Loop button is enabled on the Transport bar. Slip a video event by holding the Alt button and using your mouse to drag "inside and over the video event".

Try my tutorial on velocity envelopes at the Vegas Video Forum on WWUG. It is located under Articles & Tips along the left side. Then go to the Vegas Video listing.

Remember, with velocity envelopes, that the duration does not change in the event. If you slow down a 10 second event to 50%, you will see only see the first five seconds of that event and not get a 20 second slo mo event. You can extend the the right edge another 10 seconds and end up with the original 10 seconds slo mo'd to 20 seconds. If you use -100% of an event from the first frame, nothing is there for it to play backwards. That is why you need to slip (Alt drag)it over so it actually starts playing from the end at 10 seconds back to the start of the event in reverse.
