Is it snowing in Vegas?

I did a quick stop-motion animation film with my kids last year as a XMAS project, and they want to do another one this year. I was thinking it might be fun to add a snowstorm. Are there any Vegas-native ways to do falling snow? This is not a professional project, just for fun for me and my kids.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

You can experiment with the noise texture plugin and get something moderately convincing. Only took me about 2 minutes of tweaking to get something usable. For even better effect you should create several layers, with larger "flakes" in front falling faster and smaller flakes behind falling slower.

I have an animation i created ages ago here: http://www.rchv.com/store/detalac?snowfall-01
It's only SD, but i'd be happy to send you a copy if it would help. Might try digging out the code and making an HD version of it if i get some free time later this week.

Are you talking about the "Sony Add Noise" plugin?

Here's a veg file that I grabbed from somewhere several years ago. Although it's an SD file, I just used it on an HD project (over top of some stills and video) and it looked great. You may have to do some adjustments to it to get it to work for you but it's a start.

I uploaded that snow VEG file years ago. I still have the slideshow I created using that effect. I produced this for an old friend. He kept asking for more effects, like colorizing the rings in his old ring pyramid toy. When he asked for snow in a still picture I didn't think it could be done, but I found a VEG on Kelly's old site (Chienworks) and modified it for my needs. The one I started with is probably the one he linked to above.

Go to the 0:20 second mark of this WMV file to see the result of my efforts:

Bride-Groom Wedding Dinner Slide Show

It actually worked really, really well. Thanks again to Kelly for his help.

If overlays are acceptable for you, you can use snow.mp4 file from Christmas TV project (it's free)
Place it on a track above your footage and set compositing mode to Add

"I was thinking it might be fun to add a snowstorm."

As strange and funny as this may sound, snow isn't completely foreign to the desert Southwest. In the Winter of 1971 - 72 I was in the Air Force stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson Arizona. I woke up one morning to find 7" of snow covering the entire city. Growing up in Northeast Ohio this much snow is hardly noticed. But in Tucson, it completely paralyzed the city.
