Is there a better way to edit mpg?

I'm converting my mpeg2 *.mmv files from my wonderful Sony IP220E to AVI to edit. I was quite happy with the way I was editing the mpg files when I was editing my travel videos, but I am now editing my niece's wedding and I simply can't get the accuracy I need by editing mpgs. They are fine to rough cut, but I can't see my edits accurately enough on a fine cut to know exactly what is happening as the preview drops to as low as 6 fps if I even use a dissolve. The problem's worst when I am trying to edit the music on the wild soundtrack. The edits actually turn out ok when I render out to mpeg2, but because I can't know exactly what I am getting until I render it, I just get too frustrated. Is there some way I can edit the mpg files without getting these problem?

Thanks,

Brian

Suggest you render the clips to AVIs then edit. Editing timeline can then be exported back to MPEG. Only way I know of.

I'm not suggesting BUT I also edit MPEG2 at times.

Somehow, editing MPEG2 requires the utmost from the CPU. Especially, when you need to effect changes. You just can't see the changes at one go.

If I do not want to render out the changes, I simply loop the region of change & let VV render it on the fly 'live'. Usuually by the six or seven passes, the change would be confirmed.(Based on 2.4G CPU)

Hope you see similiarity in your applications.
