Shake was originally owned by a company called Nothing Real. It started out as a Windows and IRIX (SGI) application and eventually moved to Linux. Then Apple bought the company and just as the application was ported to OSX. Since then, they have dumped the Windows version and stopped development on the IRIX and Linux versions.

As for comparable compositing applications, there are several Windows and Linux based applications on the Market. Here is a list:

Digital Fusion - www.eyeonline.com
Nuke - www.d2software.com

At the lower end of the price spectrum you get into Combustion from Discreet and After Effects from Adobe.

I hope this was useful.

P.S. By the way, Weta used the Linux versions of Shake on Dell workstations for the Lord of the Ring Trilogy.
