is there a select edit script

Former user wrote on 5/30/2021, 4:49 PM

My title is not very good, but this is a script I would like.

I sometimes go through my video and mark In and Out of select scenes using the MARK KEY (M). It would be helpful if there was a script that would go through these marks, all ODD number marks would be considered IN and EVEN number marks would be OUT. It would take these scenes and move or copy them to a new track so I then have a track of selects without me having to move each one. Is there a script like this or is not possible with Vegas? thanks

If it would be fine to have your marked edits appear as clips in the Explorer window instead of in a new track then there's a way to do that by using Vegasaur combined with a core feature of Vegas Pro.

While a script could be written, you can already do this in Vegasaur using its Marker and SplitEvents tools. Here's a demo.

Added: I redid the demo to include the use of the HOS FreeTool SelectEventsInRegions rather than manually selecting the events.

@wwaag thanks, that is one way. A lot of steps, but with lack of a script, it is a good workaround.

Here is another workflow:

  1. Use Regions instead of Markers from the beginning (press I and O for start and end and after each O directly press R to make a Region from this selection).
  2. Copy the whole track.
  3. In Vegasaur use the command to keep Events inside Regions of the selected track.

If you only need the selected Regions you can even skip the process of copying the track. So if you get used to work with Regions instead of with Markers this could be a 1-click solution. And if you use a Shuttle device or a macro software you could merge pressing O and R to a single key-stroke.

I would just use the splt (S) command at Out and In- point and delete the part between with auto ripple enabled.

Or import the video into the trimmer and Add (A) trimmed (I) and (O) parts directly into the timeline, works even during playing..

Yes there is. Try the "Extract Good Clips" tool in Excalibur. That tool will work with Markers or Regions.

Former user wrote on 5/31/2021, 8:11 AM

@jetdv How does it determine the good clips?

@jetdv How does it determine the good clips?

By AI...!

My other NLE has an option called "Content Aware Editing". It can determine in a video zooming/panning/faces/speech/motion/shakiness and poor lightning and can merge or delete scenes with those criteria.

@jetdv How does it determine the good clips?

@Former user, it uses the markers/command markers or regions you put on the timeline. You mark the clips you want to keep, it then extracts them to a new track.

It works best with regions. If using markers, you set the "start" point with a marker and the "end" point with a command marker.

So you would just add the clip to the timeline, put regions around the sections you want to keep, run Extract Good Clips, and those sections would be moved to a new track on the timeline. You can then just delete the original track.

It also has options to create sub-clips out of each new piece on the new timeline, delete the markers, remove or leave the gaps, automatically overlap them for crossfades, change the playback rate...

@joelsonforte.br thanks for taking the time to make the video. It does work, but that is a lot of steps. Obviously quicker than dragging if you have many many keeper takes. Thanks again.

3POINT wrote on 5/31/2021, 3:08 PM

@Former user How do you set your markers, just playing the video and hit M at the desired location?

Former user wrote on 5/31/2021, 3:10 PM

Sometimes while playing, sometimes stop and mark, but basically yeah. I am going to play with a macro thru my Shuttle.

3POINT wrote on 5/31/2021, 3:18 PM

Just put your video in the trimmer, hit the spacebar to start playing, press I at an In point and O at an outpoint, immediately after you pressed O, press A. The content between I and O is added to the timeline. Just let the playhead keep running and press again I and O immediately followed by A when a part of interest passes. And so on, Timeline fills with your selected fragments.

Former user wrote on 5/31/2021, 3:38 PM

@3POINT another approach, still not what I was trying to get, but a workable option.

Former user wrote on 5/31/2021, 3:40 PM

@joelsonforte.br again I appreciate your effort and ideas. This requires the purchase of Excalibur, which I would prefer to have a cheaper option. I do own Vegasaur though.

Former user wrote on 5/31/2021, 3:41 PM

Shuttle Macro doesn't work because there is no way to select an event without using a mouse.

Former user wrote on 5/31/2021, 4:03 PM

I just figured out another way, I don't know if it is any easier, but it seems to be less steps. Track 1- Original video track, Track 2- generated media (maybe black solid). Create Multicamera track, enable multicam camera editing. Edit like multi cameras with 1 being your active video and 2 being your black track. After you have made your edits, go to the EDIT DETAILS window, sort by track, select all of the black tracks and delete. Now all you have left are your selects. Not saying it is the best, but that is what is good about Vegas, many ways to achieve something.

Marco. wrote on 5/31/2021, 4:15 PM

@Former user The workflow I mentioned does not need to select an event. You would only need a macro or the Shuttle if you would like to merge the O and R commands.

And it would be much easier as what you described above. It's marking In and Out, set Region, extract Regions. Done.

joelsonforte.br wrote on 5/31/2021, 4:15 PM

@Former user

Since you own Vegasaur. You can do this from the video below.

Former user wrote on 5/31/2021, 4:21 PM

Okay @Marco. and @joelsonforte.br I think you are both describing the same thing and that seems to be the easiest option yet. Thanks for your very helpful input and ideas. This will make some of my projects a bit easier. Thanks again for everyone's help.

@Former user, If you create regions instead of markers, using the Extract Good Clips tool is a one step process.

Since you already have markers... while not automated, you can click on marker 1, CTRL-SHIFT Right-Arrow, and then press r. Now click on marker 3, CTRL-SHIFT Right-Arrow, and then press r. Continue that until all the marker sections now have regions instead. Then run the Extract Good Clips tool on the new regions.

Or you could use the Convert Markers tool in Excalibur to convert the markers to regions. Then delete every other region and run the Extract Good Clips tool on the remaining regions.

Many ways this can be done.
