Is there a way to change double-click behavior on envelopes?

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 5/21/2025, 9:42 PM

I use envelopes a lot while editing audio in my projects.

I double-click to add a point.

If I don't get the line quite correctly, Vegas highlights/selects an entire event, or sometimes the track, and jumps the timeline cursor to the beginning of that selected region. VERY annoying! If do that double-click before pausing the video it's even more annoying as it changes the position and I have to find out where I was.

Is there a way to DISABLE the double-click-to-select-full-event behavior? (I searched this forum, and also explored Vegas preferences, but couldn't find it)

What other tips are there to help add points and tweak envelopes during playback?

  • I do have a compressor on my master audio output
  • My preference is to adjust volume envelopes on a master PIT bus and body pack bus, rather than just push everything up and squash it with a master compressor-- when possible I try to still maintain some level of dynamics while keeping spoken dialog at reasonable levels.

What if you "Right-Click" and then choose "Add Point"?

You add a volume (or other) change by selecting a region and drag the envelope up or down... the four transition points are added automatically. I use this procedure extensively when mixing audio and saves me lots of time, It works on all tracks and buses.

Double clicking on the envelope line adds a point but it is quirky and sometimes selects something else I don't want to change.

I do that sometimes but Im not sure that works during playback without pausing.. which I usually do anyway to minimize pain of unexpected jump if I missed the envelope.

I'll try doing more of this

Oooooooh... that's a thing?! I will check it out! Seems like it would minimize mis-click impact for sure!

I wonder if "add point" can be mapped to a keyboard shortcut? (Would still have to select the envelope I'd think)

Will try this when im back at the desk

Seems to work but alas no keyboard mapping.

Also tried using Excaliber's "Four Points" but it doesn't seem to work on busses so that's a no-go.

Tried using Vegasaur's "Envelope Points" which is neat BC it'll add either 4 points or single points "under cursor" on selected tracks OR busses -- but it doesn't seem to remember a user's choices so it can be quickly auto-applied with a single keyboard mapping... so not going to be an efficiency gain there.

I'll try the right-clicks or ye ol' "select region and drag" and see how that goes... :-)

Related --- Vegas I can right-click and add a point. Vegasaur and Excaliber tools could be useful here but miss slightly on efficiency for reasons mentioned.

And although both have a "four points" concept (including Vegas by selecting a region and dragging), none have a "TWO POINTS" concept.

When adding a point to adjust the envelope -- I really want to add a point as anchor so it doesn't affect everything beforehand, AND add a new point a bit after which I will be adjusting for what's ahead. It's similar to four-points, but without adding end-markers who's positions I don't yet know anyway since I'm doing my finishing work linearly.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns make your own script that behaves exactly like you want. Here's the first of a 5 part tutorial series on envelopes:

When I wrote Excalibur, I wasn't thinking about bus tracks. While that could easily be added, it would be much quicker to just write a script that does exactly what you're wanting to do.

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns I use Automation Write to add an anchor point, place the cursor & double click the slider.
