is there any way i can turn down the preview volume?

target wrote on 3/26/2025, 6:56 PM

so i recorded a video with my microphone but when i jump into vegas pro, it's too loud. i want to turn down the volume without it effecting my audio tracks. i could just turn the volume down via windows volume but that's just really annoying if i have to turn it down every time i open up a new project in vegas pro. i use vegas pro 19.

tysm!!

@target What are you doing with the final render? If you're video is recorded too loud & you're uploading to a site then is it going to be too loud for your viewers? What you're asking to do is artificially alter the sound of one program but when that final render is played on a different media player or for someone else online it'll be the orig volume, ie too loud. Makes no sense, set up your PC audio level so it sounds right by watching your media in a media player set to full/100% & compare it by watching other stuff like online videos etc to decide if it is recorded too loud, then edit your video in Vegas without altering the volume on your PC, if it's too loud only adjust the audio of the project or the media on the timeline so it does sound like it does in the media player or online stuff. Or find a way to record at a lower level.

Basically if you adjust Vegas's volume that'll be the only place that your media will play at that level.

There's a "dim" button above the master sliders.

Hokinar wrote on 3/26/2025, 9:19 PM

One way to adjust mic volume - assumming all of those tracks are seperate from one another - is to move the "bar" inside the track itself. Hover ur mouse over the top edge of the mic track, it should show as the hand pointer. Left-click and hold, move around and it should show a "level" of sorts. If ur tracks happen to be "glued" to each other (meaning all of them get adjusted), press the mic track to highlight it and press "U" to seperate it from the rest.

EDIT: Oh wait a sec, it must be that little blue thingy at the exact middle of the track, just above the - for lack of a better word - voice graph. One of those two.

Another way i would assume is to try the "db" slider on the left of the mic track.

Do take a look at the loudness log and try to get the overall audio into a normal range for internet (-16LUFS or so) or broadcast (-23). If it's way higher or lower it's not going to be a good experience for your listeners.

If you just need to lower the volume of one audio event, just lower the event's 'Gain' as @Hokinar previously stated.
You can also use a track volume automation envelope (Tip: highlight the segment on the timeline and drag the envelope line downward. Four transition points are added automatically)..

There's lots of options mentioned & available for reducing the volume in Vegas but this is how I read the OP's comment. (vid below), If this is done the true perception of how loud the video/project being created would be wrong & so the rendered file.

@Gid that is exactly what i wanted! thank you so much!! i had no idea about the volume mixer until now and i had my PC for 6 years. still getting schooled... 😭😭

@jetdv i tried dimming the output before but unfortunately that effects the levels of your audio when you render but i got a solution! thanks for ur help tho i really appreciate it

@Hokinar @rraud thank you guys for your help, i wasn't trying to lower the audio as such but i was trying to lower my ouput volume (the volume i was hearing through my headphones) if that makes sense. i appreciate the help tho!

@RogerS i actually didn't know anything about LUFS and the loudness log until today. that was so cool, thanks mate. i just had one question on what you thought about my microphone audio level. in OBS Studio i have my microphone peak set to -5dB with a limiter. what are your thoughts on that? is it fine? im trying to make sure my audience can hear me without clipping / distorting the audio. a lot of people say its fine. im going to be uploading to youtube.

I must point out that when I say 'if this is done' I'm referring to lowering Vegas's volume level in the systems Volume Mixer like I do in the video. & that it would be wrong to do this because how would you truly know how loud the rendered file would turn out to be.

PS.

@target You added your text as I was writing the above,, If it's too loud for you while working in Vegas surely it's going to be too loud for your audience even tho they say it's fine....? I don't fully understand how you can correctly work on a project when you've muffled Vegas's sound in the Volume Mixer.

PPS. Sorry, of course it's up to you how you work & you've found an answer to your orig request 👍

For your microphone, how much variation does your voice have? If you normally increase by 5db (go from quiet to load) I'd give it more headroom than that and then raise the volume in post when needed. I'd reserve the limiter for emergencies vs something that frequently kicks in.

When you look at your audio in VEGAS what does it sound like during the loudest parts? Can you tell if the limiter is engaging and does it sound unnatural?

I'd watch a couple of YouTube videos on the general topics like: and for audio concepts.
