Click off quantize to frames, merge clips, then click quantize to frames back on. I believe it is only a timeline playback bug as when rendering you don't see it.

There are several threads about this. I do believe it's a bug and there seems to be no way around it (other than fixing it by hand or buying excalibur). Do a search on "event gaps" or "black frames" and you can see for your self.
Also take a look at http://www.pbase.com/image/19256353, is that what you are seeing?

I've heard about the black frames issue but this is actually a slight overlap of clips butted up against each other. I was under the impression the black frames issue was actually a small gap in between. In my case they are overlaped much less than a frame but enough to cause a flicker of the two clips at the edit point.
