ISO Image Writer? Architect 4.5

Thank you in advance for responding to my email.

I have architect 4.5 and successfully completed burning 20 DVD's over the weekend. I bought more DVD's today, Verbatim Lightscribe +R 16x
I opened Architect and prepared to burn a DVD as I always do. When I hit finish to start burning the DVD, a box appearred that said "retrieving media info." 20 minutes later in the box where it said device, in the Burn Parameters box, it said ISO Image Writer, I didn't want to waste any more time so I said OK and it "burned" a DVD. I went to play it and it did not work. How do I mak the program use by DVD drive to burn the DVD's and not this ISO Image Writer that I had never seen before tonight and now does not let me select the DVD Burner as my device?

The data on a CD/DVD is written a bit differently than on your hard drive - a disc image file (ISO) is an exact copy of that data as it will be or is written on the disc itself. ISO images have their uses, & DVDA like a lot of other programs will create (if you ask it to) an ISO image on your hard drive instead of burning a disc or writing the data to VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders on your hard drive. When you click on the Make DVD button in DVDA, you'll go through a couple of dialog boxes until you come to the Select Burn Parameters dialog, where you should be able to select either your burner or the ISO image writer.

When you created an ISO image, it was written to your hard drive, not the DVD blank in your burner, so the blank is still blank. Most burning software,, Nero, Roxio, Starburn, Imgburn etc can now burn that ISO image to a blank DVD disc.

You should be able to select your burner instead of the image writer in that Burn Parameters dialog... If you can't, maybe there's a problem between your burner & your new media, which could explain the 20 minute delay you experienced. Before looking further I'd see what happens with another disc, since the 1st one might have been damaged/defective.

If the problem's still there, the easiest solution is to return &/or exchange the discs for another brand or model. Each disc has recorded on it already some ID info that your burner reads to find out how to burn that particular disc. Sometimes that info is fudged - as in counterfeit media using codes from another brand, & sometimes your burner just doesn't have the codes stored already in it's internal database. Or it could be some sort of problem just within DVDA.

Burning the ISO image you produced should tell you if the problem is incompatibility between your disc and burner - if it burns OK, then your burner probably doesn't have a problem with those discs. If it doesn't, than you can research your burner to see if there are any firmware updates - check the manufacturer web site & cdfreaks.com - or modifications you can make to your firmware using something like Media Code Speed Edit.

But chances are it would be easier just to go to a different model of Verbatim discs.

I will probably just end up buying new DVD's to burn on. The problem occurred that it would not let me choose to use the DVD burner, once it saw the media it would convert to ISO and not even have the DVD burner in the drop down list. I don't know why that happenned.

Hello again,

I bought HP DVD+R discs today and when the select burn parameters dialog box came up, I had it on the DVD writer, I clicked burn and for over half an hour I got the "retrieving Media information..Please Wait" and then it never got past that. Any other suggestions?

If you hadn't just burned all those discs I would have said just don't burn in DVDA since it doesn't like your burner. Rendering the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders to your hard drive lets you check your DVD, edit it, and burn multiple copies faster, so that what many of us do & recommend.

If you prepare a DVD to your hard drive will Nero or another program burn it to those same discs? Nero has a downloadable trial... Or you could try Imgburn, which is free, & a much smaller download. You don't have to stick with either, unless you like it better, but it would tell you that your drive is working properly & that your blank discs are OK.

Just curious, have you tried just double clicking on the ISO image Icon, it should open up Architech by default with that project loaded, then you can choose which Burner to use from the drop box ....
