Issues with mp4 video files and MainConcept

Hello everyone,

When importing mp4 files from my GH3 camera i am able to do it until a certain point when Vegas doesn't responds or an error message shows up. The error is related to mcmp4.dll. I went to the timeline to one of those video file properties as a way to discover wich codec was openning it and in fact it says it's MainConcept (mcmp4.dll).

After investigating a lot online on the forum and elsewere i got no answer that would solve this issue.

Finally i decided to make an experiment: i removed the mcmp4.dll folder from the FileIO Plug-Ins folder as a way to see if there was another codec to open that mp4 file type. The result was: QT7 did it. Now i was able to import all 24 files to the timeline and play them with no issues. I supose editing will not be a problem either.

I'm running SVP 8.0c on Win7 64bit, however i think it's not relevant. I would say it seems there is a problem with MainConcept mp4 codec. Does anyone knows a fix for this?

Thank you in advance for any feedback

In Vegas 8.0c, your file should open with Quicktime libraries. QT version 7.6.x works best.
If the Mainconcept plugin is causing problems, try renaming it and reinstalling Vegas.
Vegas 8.0c reached its end-of-life and is not supported on Win7 at all, so that may be part of your problem.

First of all, thank you musicvid10 for your answer.

In Win7 these files are played by QT. If in Vegas 8.0c mp4 files should be openned with Quicktime librairies then this isn't the case. Instead it is being openned by Mainconcept codec. Why? I don't know. The only solution for them to be oppened by the qt7.dll is to remove the mcmp4plug.dll from the FileIO Plug-Ins folder.

QT version i'm using is 7.6. Later versions don't allow me to work with the GH3 MOV files.

Renaming the MainConcept plugin or reinstalling Vegas produce no desirable result.

I allready knew that Vegas 8 reached its end-of-life and also that it wasn't supported by Win7 since in the system information it states that my OS is Win Vista v6. Nevertheless it's what i have to work with.

It's a fact. In SVP8 i can open projects, play and edit several mp4 video files after removing mcmp4plug.dll. The only negative side is that the QT codec doesn't allow a fluid image reading as the MC codec. Nevertheless it's better than crashing everytime i try to import half a dozen mp4 files.

I cannot explain why this happens with the MC codec, i just know that removing it solves the problem. Do i miss it? As i explained, only for fluid image reading on the timeline. For encoding i prefer Sony mp4 codec, it delivers a better image with no artifacts.

Are you having the same problem with a different version? Why not make this simple experiment? Who knows, maybe it's the solution for you too ;-)
