Yeah, the Vegas crew always amazed me with a couple of features like this one. If we compare Vegas with other NLEs there are plenty of those "little" things which make working with Vegas so much more comfortable.

Where exactly is the 'selection length box'? I must be missing something subtle. :)
Thanks
taliesin wrote on 4/23/2004, 9:19 AM
It's in the lower right corner of the timeline.

Thanks Marco. That's where I was looking. When I create a named region and click elsewhere on the timeline, the two rightmost boxes are empty.

Cheesehole wrote on 4/23/2004, 9:49 AM
Works for me Tom. The rightmost box shows a light grey time.

I'm glad others find joy in the little things too. Vegas should have a tip-of-the-day option or something where they point out all the cool little things :)

Do you use Vegas 4 or Vegas 5? - This is only in Vegas 5. Maybe you've got that "collapse loop region" selected in the prefernces (editing-tab).

OK folks. Here's what I do (using the demo/trial version of V5):

1. Put event on timeline
2. Drag to create selection
3. On menu bar Insert -> Region (named or unnamed)
4. Click outside selection

Nada, nil, nothing.

What am I NOT doing that you are?

Thanks

Tom

EDITED:

OK .. got it. I had 'Collapse' checked. Thanks marco et al.

Unless I had these preferences turned off in Vegas 5, I have noticed that Vegas now seems to remember the last transition you used and that the transition properties window opens as soon as you create a transition.

This has been very helpful for my recent workflow.

One of the new little things that I like is the timeline scrubbing--a real time saver--

Rex - Rednroll was right about <you> being the newbie.

Timeline scrubbing is not a new thing. It's been in Vegas since version 1 (Vegas Pro). It's come along way since then, but it's always been there.

Please, let's not go there.

Regarding timeline scrubbing, what do you mean by it? I know about the JKL keys, but what I'd also like to see is where you can just grab the timeline indicator (the "scrubber?") and slew it around the timeline with the mouse.
Ben  wrote on 4/23/2004, 3:12 PM
riredale - hold down CTRL and left mouse button whilst over the cursor in the timeline - you'll see a speaker icon appear - and by moving the mouse you can scrub the timeline. If that's what you mean in your post, the functionality's already there. You can also scrub by moving the mousewheel over the scrub control (on the left hand side of the screen below the track pane). Check out the help for more details on all this.

The best way though of scrubbing is using the Contour Shuttle Pro, or similar. I use to extensively, as it seems many here do. It's great for scrubbing, and general editing in fact.

Ben---here is a question for you--now Troll Red isn't here to direct you so I think you might be a bit confused---Okay---here we go---

What new scrubbing tool is part of Vegas 5.0? Thats what I was referring to--man are you slow! Have you discovered it yet---Simpleton, we are not discussing version 4.0---are we??
Cheesehole wrote on 4/23/2004, 3:20 PM
In Vegas 2,3 and 4 you could always click/drag a time selection to do essentially the same thing that Vegas 5 does now. But I like the new way better. Now you can grab the cursor and slew it where ever you want without selecting time.
Cheesehole wrote on 4/23/2004, 3:29 PM
If you double click the vertical scroll bar for the track view, it will collapse/expand the track headers. This was in V4 too... but hey I just discovered it so it's new to me!
rextilleon wrote on 4/23/2004, 3:32 PM
No cheesehole, if you set the cursor on the timeline-----then put your mouse over it---you will get a double sided arrow--that allows you to scrub at super speeds a la Premiere--an excellent new feature---Thats what I was referring to when I spoke of the little thing--ie. scrubbing that I liked about Vegas 5.0.
Cheesehole wrote on 4/23/2004, 3:36 PM
>an excellent new feature

Rex, I've been doing that since Vegas 2. The only difference now is it doesn't make a time selection. I know exactly what you are talking about, and I like it a lot because now I don't lose my time selection when scrubbing.
Ben  wrote on 4/23/2004, 3:39 PM
LOL.

rextilleon - I'm suprising myself here by actually responding to your childish insults. But I'm fairly thick skinned and obviously you haven't quite reached puberty yet, so I'll leave you to it. In fact you'll notice that I responded to to riredale by answering his question, something you failed to do.

You said:

"One of the new little things that I like is the timeline scrubbing--a real time saver--"

That's a very general statement as there are various ways of scrubbing in Vegas. As I stated, timeline scrubbing already existed in Vegas before 5. If you're talking about the new drag the edit cursor feature, as nice as it it, it's not technically scrubbing, nor do Sony refer to it as that.

Ha ok.

Thanks cheesehole. Rex - do I get an apology? Maybe you should <read> people's posts, especially when they're trying to give out helpful information, before claiming to be the Vegas know-it-all. You'll see that I explained the CTRL-left click scrub in the post above yours, and as I had already stated, it's been in Vegas a long time.

Ben
rextilleon wrote on 4/23/2004, 4:03 PM
yeah, but you dont have to hit any control keys--it just scrubs nicely----its a feature change.
Cheesehole wrote on 4/23/2004, 4:21 PM
Rex, you didn't have to hold any control keys before - the draggable cursor feature is virually identical to the way Vegas has worked at least since version 2. Got Vegas in front of you? Just drop a clip on the time line and drag a time selection. It's the same thing! A draggable cursor with realtime feedback from the preview window! It even scrolls at the same rate when you get to the edge of the screen!* :)

* Little thing of the day: With the new draggable cursor, you may be wondering how you make time selections without dragging the cursor around - well you could turn off the draggable cursor in options, but try this instead: "single-click" on the new cursor (After the mouse cursor turns into the two arrows, clicking it turns you back into a pointer, then you can click/drag a time selection just like before, ingenious!)
rextilleon wrote on 4/23/2004, 4:29 PM
Cheese, I think we are talking about two different things--to check I opened up 4.0--- This is from the 4.0 Help Menu------

To Scrub the Time Line

Hover over the cursor in an area of the timeline that does not contain an event and press Ctrl. The mouse pointer is displayed as a .

When the Allow Ctrl+drag cursor style scrub over events check box on the General tab of the Preferences dialog is selected, you can scrub with the mouse even when the cursor is over an event.

Drag left or right to scrub playback.

In version 5.0 you just click on the timeline, place your mouse over the cursor and you get an icon with two arrows pointing in different directions. Then you can scrub to your hearts content--its much more responsive and faster then the method listed above.

Drag left or right to scrub playback.

Cheesehole wrote on 4/23/2004, 4:37 PM
Actually Rex, YOU are talking about two different things :) You are comparing the "Scrub" feature from Vegas 4 (which still exists in the same form in Vegas 5), with the "draggable cursor" feature in Vegas 5. Apples and oranges. Different tools for different needs. One plays audio and moves in a linear fashion, the other skips around like the Premiere cursor.

ibliss wrote on 4/23/2004, 4:37 PM
cheese -
with the V5 scrub you can hold down shift to force the creation of a new loop region.
