It would be nice if...

...if there were some way (I hope there is!) to work with segments of an event separate from the entire event. In other words, when I apply a volume envelop, it extends out over the entire timeline, even though I may only want to use it for 10 seconds. Is there a way (ScreenPlay does this and I found it very useful) to apply effects--and effect--ONLY to a segment snipped from a larger event? IOW, to LICALIZE and effect. Does anyone know? TIA,

Two ways. The simplest is just restore the envelope to zero (the middle position). If your hover you mouse it reads out where it is currently set. The second way it just drop the event to another track (insert track first). You are unlimited in the number of tracks you can have. Just remember if you have one track on top of the other unless you adjust the opacity of the upper track all track below it can't be seen. For audio it doesn't matter, each track can be adjusted seperatley and you can set different filters and have different volume envelopes for each audio track you have or go to the next level and add bus control.

Also Vegas works on the "event" concept. You can apply effects either to your whole video, an entire track or by an event. You can split the timeline anywhere into as many events as you want. Move you cursor over the timeline where you want a break, click, select EDIT form the menu bar then select split. Dragging the right edge of the event exposes more of the video, dragging it left further reduces it. This is non destructive and does not effect the source file.

You really need to do the basic tutorial to learn some of the basics.

BB is correct. If you haven't got it yet, here is the download for the 315 page manual - its FREE too!

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/download/step2.asp?DID=441

There really is a mass of very useful stuff - stuff that you will want to be able to refer to and write your onw "side-notes" on - yeah? I know BB is talking about basic self training - audio envelope control is a point in case - but augmenting this with your very own V4 manual - full colour! - will assist you immensely.

Hey, I still ask questions, whose answers may have lurked within the manual - don't worry . . . better ask than get frustrated. Maybe we could assist others to make use of the manual by quoting the Page number. Yes there is the index, but as we all know sometimes this feature/function rich software gives the operator more than one way to skin a particular feline. . . .

Many thanks for your valued responses. You are right, of course. I have done the tutorial, and I just forgot about doing more tracks because I'm so used to using just one core timeline for video. I found it so easy to work with events in the Applied-Magic ScreenPlay that I wanted to do the same thing here. I needed to get jolted out of the old paradigm and you guys did the job. Many thanks!
