Jerky playback!

Help! All of a sudden all video playback is jerky. 3 seconds, pause, 3 seconds, pause, 3 seconds, pause etc etc
This happens in Vegas, Win Media Player....all video playback is now stuttered

I'm clueless where to begin to remedy this.

How do I post my computer's profile? Here is a copy/paste of Belarc:

1. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del.

2. Click on the "Processes" tab.

3. Click on the CPU column twice in order to put the most CPU-intensive task ta the top.

The list will bounce around and change, depending on what process is taking up CPU cycles. Forget about "System Idle Process," but other than that, what two or three processes seem to spend the most time at the top of the list?

Another thing you will want to check is the DMA for each disk drive channel.

YTBSDK.exe- Norton Internet Security

hprblog.exe: HP all in one software, or possible camouflaged malware:
http://www.file.net/process/hprblog.exe.html

Both of these are unnecessary for serious editing. Disable these while editing and see if that helps. (I would disconnect from the internet while disabled, or try a different firewall app)

If SQL Server is only for Sony Media Manager, it should be OK. If you are running SQL server to feed a web site/major application, then you need a separate dedicated editing machine.

I am not a big fan of anti-virus software, but especially the Norton Symantec stuff. I have had to "rid" client computers of this software in order to get them running at a decent speed. I have never been able to get to the bottom of what can cause it to suddenly start sucking cycles, but I've seen it with my own eyes, and it can be devastating to the performance of the computer.

It could very well be the cause of your problem.

Don't uninstall your anti-virus software, but I would recommend that you see if you can use the settings in the anti-virus setup to tell it to NOT do any real-time or background checking. Basically, disable every one of its background checks so that it doesn't run AT ALL in the background.

If you have a firewall, a router, and have your email and browser security settings pretty well set, and if you don't download lots of EXE files, you'll probably be just fine. I've never used any anti-virus software and I have nine computers and kids that use them. Computers can definitely get viruses, but unless you are running the first version of Windows XP with no updates and unless you have your computer completely mis-configured, it's getting less and less likely that your computer is going to get one (although this certainly depends on the sites you visit and on whether you download lots of programs from astalavista.box.sk).

How do I check the DMA?

Right-click My Computer and select Manage;
Click Device Manager;
Click the + sign beside IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers;
Double-click Primary IDE Channel(this should be your two hard drives);
Click the Advanced Settings tab;
Make sure the Transfer Mode is set to DMA if available.
If properly set, Current Transfer Mode should say Ultra DMA Mode 2.
You'll also see a Secondary IDE Channel option. This should be your CD-ROM drive. If it says PIO Mode, don't worry about it as that's normal.

YTBSDK.exe appears more often than not at the top

Google says:
ytbsdk.exe is a file created by Symantec Corporation and is a part of Norton Internet Security - Status Helper.
Do yourself a huge favour and get rid of Norton. It's well-known to be a tremendous resource hog. There are much better (and far less invasive) anti-virus programs out there.

Thanks for the ideas. However, I'm convinced this is all due to some sort of settings. The jerky playback is very systematic....not simply random. Even the Windows sounder on boot up skips. So something deep inside must have been inadvertantly set wrong, either in the BIOS or in Windows orwhatnot. I'm stumped and fairly frustrated. This obviously never happened before.
craftech wrote on 3/8/2007, 6:29 AM
John is right. XP runs too many processes you have to allow to run. The unnecessary ones should be stopped along with the other unnecessary ones installed by programs. If you disconnect from the internet, there is no need to run resident antivirus programs or even firewalls for starters.

Had a very similar problem once. It was a failing hard drive.
