Joystick / Colour Wheel Support

beegee wrote on 4/24/2003, 8:15 AM
Just reading this from the 4.0b release notes...

"A new preference has been added to the General tab in the Preferences dialog. Select the Enable Joystick Support check box if you want to use a joystick to control panning, color corrector wheels, and other controls. Clearing the check box can prevent problems with copy-protection dongles."

Just wondering if vegas supports any specific joystic device?

And to what extent does the joystick support go in vegas?

Just having some linear on-line flashbacks, and thought it would great to be able to resize pictures ( a la dve) like on a vision switcher, and the good ol 3 ball device for changing colours.

Any information would on this would make my day...(I must be having a slow day then :)

cheers ears

I wouldn't really reccomend using a joystick since they aren't really designed with video editing in mind, but I would highly reccomend getting a Shuttle pro. It works great with Vegas and is really designed for video editing.

i second that. the shuttle pro works great. i have the little brother space shuttle, it fits what i need. everything is programmable, i use it on vegas, cubase 5.1, cubase sx, adobe and more....... plus it is a usb interface. good choice.

take a look

I have a logitech Wingman Rumblepad and I can say it work very well with Vegas. It cost pretty much less than the shuttle. The pad features 2 small joysticks. The left joystick can be used to control pan, volume, color correction. I don't find that very useful, the mouse is more precise. However, with the Wingman profiler I can setup the other joystick to scrub and that's where the thing shines. I like it more than the shuttle. I set the horizontal axis to scrub, and the vertical axis to pause/stop. So With one little stick I can do all those things. I can then configure the buttons to do several things, including trimming.... for 20 $ it's quite a deal.

The current joystick functions are surround panning and color correction color disks. Also, faders and trackbars with focus can be set with the joystick. You can still use a ShuttlePRO at the same time, they are both useful input devices, depending on what work you're doing.

For more information, check out the "Using a Joystick" topic in the online help.

If you want to get a more technical idea of what can be done with a joystick in Vegas, and which sticks are already supported, check out the "Joystick Profiles" directory below where Vegas is installed. There is a readme file that tells how to create additional profiles.

I recommend the Microsoft sticks, they have way more resolution and far less jitter than the Logitech and Gravis devices that I tested.

A future version may support the joystick in the pan/crop and track motion dialogs, it makes perfect sense. I was also thinking about doing something with the scrub control. Other ideas are welcome.

Nat:

I've been meaning to ask just how you set up your other stick for scrubbing -- is it using JKL commands, or something else? I have the same device now in my growing collection <g>. I'm considering native joystick support for variable speed scrubbing sometime in the future, but I wanted to hear how you got it working already. Thanks.

Dennis :
I made a profile in the Logitech Wingman Profiler. As I said, I use the right joystick to scrub in Vegas since it doesn't interfere with other Vegas commands. I set the X axis to J and L so left is assigned to J and right to L. Since there's no "middle" or neutral function in the profiler (I doubt it exists in any profiler) I set k on the y axis, forward. I also set the stop (spacebar) function to the backwards y axis, because I like being able to set the cursor back where it began playing. I configured the rest of the buttons to different shorcuts like keyboard trimming and such. There's also a shift key that you can assign which is nice.
I think the throttle could be used to scrub also since you can place it where you want, that would be more conveniant than the joystick in some situations since the sticks have a spring.

If you want I can send you my Wingman profile and my vegas joystick configuration. You'll also have quite a bit of fun if you play with the pan with the left joystick... Vibration that increases when the pan increases, pretty funny.

Little addition : I tried to use it in the Capture section, but it doesn't work :( Would be great to control the camera's transport with the stick.

Exactly...The one thing that I miss most from linear suites when on most NLE is risizing, moving, rotating etc from some type of stick device...eg: slide the PIP of the screen, add keyframe, slide it on add key frame etc

If this sort of functionality can be added to pan/crop & track motion, and for instance the ability to assign an "add keyframe" button to the device as well.

I know it's currently simple as it is, but it is always great to be able to get your hand of the mouse as much as possible.

Thanks for your help

I recommend a decent trackball (over a mouse or joystick) that can be have the sensitivity of how fast the cursor moves adjusted. This can give you very fine adjuments easily which you'll appreciate when making minute adjustment with the various FX filters and for other graphic work when you don't need a pen. Trying to do the same with a joystick makes me break out in a cold sweat.
