jpeg images in vegas

Have been using V5 quite happily on laptop. On new desk top (copy registered and all) get a crash when I add a jpeg still to the timeline. That is, when reload the project get "an exception has occurred" and this leads to exit from execution. The details provided only indicate (to me) that the problem is in the V5 executable. Everything is fine until I try to reload a VEG that includes pointers to stills. Nothing else causes problems (I've done incremental adds/saves/reloads to make sure which causes the trouble). I haven't yet gone to the Sony website for the MPEG2 additions, but surely that isn't the problem. Advice gratefully accepted!

Have any of your JPEGS got any configuration of the letters making up - TITLE - this has been a problem. Have you got anything with MyTITLE.jpeg or something like my titlepicture.jpg . . . this is reminding me of something?

You say you have made a correct copy of Vegas on your laptop - meaning that all parts are registered? Yes?

Yes. Bought Vegas 5 for a job and installed on laptop (with all registration). That worked out well (DVD included stills). Have now bought a much more powerful desktop selected for video editing and installed Vegas on that (and registered). So this problem is associtaed with the new installation. The first still was a background for a main title, but in my iterative tests I've just dumped in any old jpeg and still got that response.

Hi Grazie ....back again online. Thanks for searching for that earlier discussion. The .bak file did open and everything is there and functioning. While I was away from the discussion I recreated on the laptop some of the timeline with all the layers that created the problem and that saved and reloaded without a hint of difficulty. And I have Photoshop 7 on the laptop also. I think the problem might lie in the configuration Vegas 5 installs (location of temporary files etc). The desktop has the harddisk as drive H (its setup put some things like memory sticks and CD/DVD drive on the lower letters (C,D,E,F,G) and I think maybe Vegas wants to be on drive C. On the desktop (since I reinstalled Vegas) on initiation Vegas wants me to insert a harddisk for the exe, but runs OK when I tell it to forget it. I'll check for the 5.0b upgrade when I get back onto broadband (presently at the seaside).
Thanks for taking the time to help -- extremely useful advice.

Just to finalise this topic (in case anyone else needs to know) my problems have disappeared with upgrade to version 5d (from Sony support site). So although Sony might not have known the cause, updated versions appear to include the necessary modifications. Now Vegas works happily sitting on drive H, whereas version 5a seemed to feel a bit lost when not on drive C.
