What is the "master window"?

Well, my terminology is probably off.

In the new fangled Version 9, there are 2 video windows. The pic show up when I have the playback window that shows up on the left, in the default layout and NOT in the window on the right.

The window on the left (the Trimmer) is showing you the media regardless if whether it's on the timeline or not. The window on the right (the Preview) is showing what's currently under the timeline cursor. Unless the pic is on the timeline and your cursor is parked over it, it will not show up in the right-hand preview window.

This is different behavior than previous versions and started with Vegas Pro 8.0c (and is not included in Vegas Pro 8.1 or earlier versions).

Thanks for the reply. I have used jpegs for quite some time in version 8. This is my first big project in 9.

Then in correct terms, it shows up in the trimmer and not in preview or sporadically shows up in preview. The file type is old shoe and I can't figure out why all of a sudden I would be having issues. Any ideas?

From the Pro 8.0c Readme:

When the Show Video Monitor button in the Trimmer window is selected, video that you preview from the Vegas Explorer and Media Manager windows is played back in the Trimmer.
Because the Trimmer is placed in the same window dock as the Explorer and Media Manager, you will not see your video preview.
To preview Explorer and Media Manager video, you can drag the Trimmer to a new dock group, or you can turn off the Show Video Monitor button to preview in the Video Preview window.

We are talking about a still on the timeline, not merely in explorer. The button you mentioned is not pushed.

I have tried deleting it and re-dragging to the timeline. I have tried duplicating the item in Corel and reburning it to Jpeg, in case it was corrupt.

When I close and reopen Vegas, it sometimes stops being red on the timeline and looks normal. In either case, it may or may not play in Preview. I have even closed the trimmer window to no avail.

When I though it was ok, I rendered and still no Jpeg. Where the Jpeg is, is simply black screen on Rendered files and in Preview.

What makes a still RED on the timeline?

Thanks for trying guys.

The red is an indication that Vegas is having trouble reading the data (which may be corrupt in some way). Try converting the jpg to a png and see if that works better.

I tried PNG, as well.

In fact, the file I tried to use has been used many times in past projects and in the current project, sometimes it seems ok and sometimes it doesn't

very strange. It may be worth the $30 to get this figured out pronto.

I GOT AN ANSWER FROM TECH SUPPORT

I am working with AVCVHD footage. They say that some are having issues using JPG's along side of AVCHD footage.

The workaround is to create, in a seperate project, an AVI of the jpg in use. From there, you can use the AVI with the AVCHD.

Hope that helps someone else as well.
