Just Curious......

In less than a week our friends at Sonic Foundry will be competing against others in the Ultimate Software NLE Shootout.

As you know, Sonic is constantly upgrading Vegas and DVD Architect to include enhancements, along with bug fixes, as evident by the just newly released version "c" of both products.

As good as Vegas 4 is now, IMHO, I was wondering if Sonic, by preparing for this competition, may be putting some further enhancements to Vegas and DVD-A that no one has seen yet. In other words, pull a few tricks out of the hat that no one expects.

IMO, I wouldn't be surprised to see Vegas win the competition handily and we, as customers, benefit greatly afterwards with a semi-major upgrade.

Just my opinion....

If it's a legitimate shootout, then one would think that each contestent would use an off the shelf copy of their NLE. I dont understand the concept of the shootout---What's in it for you unless you win. Go figure.

I'm training some of the shootout demo guys later today- if you have some pet feature you want to make sure gets covered, speak up.

SCRIPTING - I don't think any of the others can do that! I know that Premiere requires an external program to get the functionality of Excalibur which runs directly in Vegas.

Oh, yes, there's always that 24p and hd stuff! :-)

5.1 keyframing??

Improved credits.

Don't know if this request is possible - I noticed that when I plug in more than one camera/deck (one to capture and the other to preview on NTSC monitor) two can not be on at the same time - I have to turn off the camera that I'm using to preview so I can capture and vice versa... Is this a limitation of the 1394 interface? Does the ADVC-100 still give a preview to monitor when capturing?

And PDB - 5.1 is keyframable - enable 5.1 surround and right click on a track and select insert/remove envelope - the option is there.

I think the compositing tools of Vegas are far superior to any NLE out there---that's what I would highlight--

By the way, does someone win this shootout or is it just a marketing tool for the players involved---Will there be judges--(I doubt it)

Possibly off topic but how about this--it there a way to make the split-screen feature (FX bypass) in the preview window, act as a SECOND preview window a la the source & preview windows used by The Competition?

Rex, It's marketing. It's also being done all over the country.

See this link: http://www.dvline.com/cfwebstore/tour/intro.htm

Too bad they left out the MIDDLE of America - Only the outside edges. I'd like to see it.

Second that. Hey SoFo... ever hear of Chicago? Just looked at the list... Cleveland, East Landing, Pittsburg are part of the tour and a major area like CHICAGO with close to 8 million in the greater metro area is skipped?

SF: Hmmmm....no, never heard of Chicago. Are you sure that's the right spelling?

psSF: DVline set the tour schedule, we didn't get to pick the cities.

I think some of the features that are basic to Vegas, and those that we are used to and take for granted are some if its most glaring examples of superiority.

To wit:

The fact that the timeline just keeps playing as you make changes, speeds up the workflow tremendously. Try using Priemere or FCP to sync events, or make changes on the fly....they can't! You have to stap and start, stop and start.

This one feature is what puts Vegas way ahead of the others.

Agreed, Gary. Definitely take that one for granted.

Pet features:
- Secondary color correction
- RT preview to an NTSC monitor
- Shuffle mode
- Media search capabilities
- Audio capabilities (especially flawless DirectX plug-in support!)
- Transitions on any track
- Event, Track, Bus and Project level effects
- Scripting

Those are the features that made me switch from Premiere.

I have thought about this and I know one of the biggest reasons I use VV is for the audio, it has the others on this "tour" beat. Ya' kinda gots 'ta look at what VV does that the others don't, what makes VV different and "better" than Avid, for example, is not the ability to preview realtime or the ability to color correct but the ability to do a surround audio mix, or *any* audio mix, in a pro way. Also the new 24P ability is a major plus right now, Avid does not give you that option with Xpress DV. And if Price is an issue VV 4.0b with the DVD AND surround add-ons is still a bit cheaper that Avid is.
