JVC DV won't capture

Thanks in advance for indulging me. I am VERY new to DV. I just bought a new P4 1.8 and a JVC DV camera. I put in a Que! IEEE-1394 PCI card and the camera is not recognized. Windows 2000 sees the firewire card, but VV3 does not see the DV device. My intuition tells me that I skimped on the firewire card and it is not compatible with my camera. Does anyone have any tips for me?

Thanks,
JAB

The IEEE-1394 PCI card MUST be 100% compliant with the IEEE-1394 standard in order to be remotely controlled from your computer. While a few firewire cards are not, most are.

Since you're new to DV cameras maybe a simple setup thing. The obvious... you did power up the camera? Plug in the IEEE-1394 cable from the computer to the camera? You are in VCR mode and not set to make new video?

Many cameras show DV IN, DV OUT on the LCD screen and/or in viewfinder. Also the OS should detect the camera once it is plugged into the computer. For example with my Canon ZR45 as soon as I plug it into the firewire slot Windows shows it as new hardware in a pop up message.

Have you tired Vegas Video's capature and print to tape software? This is SEPERATE from the editing package. The application is called VidCap 3.0. You should be able to control your camera from it. Select print to tape to print a DV type file to the camera or select capature to input DV from the camera.

Thanks for the reply!

I think I may be on to something. I installed the firewire card in an older machine with windows ME. It detects the camera properly. My new machine has windows 2000 on it. Looks like windows 2000 may have issues with this camera. It sees the firewire card, it just doesn't work. I'm going to try swapping PCI slots just for fun to see if it matters.

Thanks for your help.

Yeah!!!!!

Sometimes you have to get back to basic troubleshooting...I plugged the IEEE into a different PCI slot and Win2k detects my camera and controls it just like it should. Now here I go!

Thanks,
