Anyone used this mini-dv/svhs recorder? I have heard that the JVC decks have problems with tapes recorded on Sony cameras, but the specs say the camera supports dvcam playback, which is a sony format. Any thoughts?
The tape problems could arise not from one brand or the other but from the cross use of various brands. In other words if you use Sony stay with Sony, if you use Panasonic stick with Panasonic and so on. As for DVCam I have seen no noticable issue with playback of DVCam tapes from Sony. Other than that I use Panasoinc Mini-DV stock all the time.
Thanks for the reply. My question was actually regarding the camera the tape was shot on. I have a Sony VX-2000 and a Panasonic DV-953. As for the tapes themselves, I know Sony uses a wet lubrication system on their tapes and most other tapes are dry lubricated. I have heard of problems resulting from the use of both styles without cleaning the heads. Thanks again for the reply!
Many people are reporting (myself as one) errors which are misshaped data blocks mostly occuring on edges in the image and are usually fo only one or two frames and usually only every couple minutes or so. They occur when 1394 is connected. In otherwords, if you play a tape with the 1394 disconnected and watch carefully you will not see the errors, but when you connect the 1394 and play the same tape, if you watch very carefully you will see the errors go by even if you are just playing back and not digitizing. JVC figures the problem is related to the grounding environment between the deck and the particular computer. They claim it is rare...but this issue is popping up on a bunch of forums....
That is also what JVC (Ken Friedman) told me; however yesterday I captured a 7 minute tape that was recorded on a JVC tape and there were absolutely no glitches during capture or when back to the same tape on a PTT. Do you happen to use Sony tapes foleym?
TIA,
Randy
yikes...I forgot I had switched tape stock after I got my cameras serviced...I'm using those over -priced Sony DVM60/80 EX.....hmmmmm .. What tape stock are you using.....?
If you play it back one way on the deck with no artifacts and play it back another way and do see them then this sounds like JVC spreading FUD to cover their butts.
It'd have to be a pretty seious ground loop problem to be upsetting 1394, there's several volts of signal there and it's either i's or 0's. If they look like digital artifacts again its possible but they'd need some pretty substandard design for a ground loop to be upsetting digital processing.
