Kaleidoscope Effect

disgruntledaswell wrote on 11/9/2013, 8:03 PM
Hi,
Does anyone know how to make a Kaleidoscope effect using vegas platinum 11?
I would like a central image with four images in the corners that would rotate around the central image.
I cant see any presets that look like they do what i want. I am not an advanced user and if it is really difficult then I would pass. I can make the corner images move in straight lines but would like to make them move in a circular motion.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Your best bet is a particle effects or similar plugin.

Hi Musicvid10

I have had a look for a particle effects but cant find one. To be honest, I am not quite sure where to look either.
I will try to do it with track motion.
If you think of anything else please let me know.
Thanks.

Adobe After Effects, Red Giant, New Blue, GenArts, Boris, Hitfilm, those are just a few names that come up by searching "particle' on these forums.

You didn't look very hard . . .

"You didn't look very hard . . . "
I dont know how to take that.
I was looking in the program itself, I did not read your mind and think "hey, if you want to do something in vegas use another program"
I thought the point of support forum for sony vegas was to help fellow users with the program.

Anyway, thanks for your help.
I will search the web for the terms you have listed. Please try to remember that not everyone is as smart as you are and do not know exactly what you mean unless you explain it better.
For instance, if you had written, 'search the web for particle effects', I would have done that.
Back to the drawing board as they say.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to answer me, it is helpful.

I don't know of any resident plugins in Vegas that meeet your needs, although some promo effects from other vendors are occasionally bundled with certain Vegas versions. Everything I mentioned are paid, third party solutions.

Thank you very much for taking the time to try and help.
I was thinking of maybe putting the spinning part on the clips and using track motion to move it around the screen. it will probably mean loads of individual points to move from one bit to the next but it is only for about 10 seconds.
Just wish I had the time!

Did you get what you sought?
I wonder that SonyCreative is missing a trick with Presets...I discovered "Preset Manager" by a chance on YouTube (where else?), and managed to load that from this Website.
If users of SMS or Vegas Pro have developed a preset, why can't there be a place to post them? It would be nice to see others' efforts and by keeping them (here) the feedback would be invaluable - and help Sony sell more software.

V13 has a 3rd party item from HitFilm (DYOR) which should cover Particles( earlier solution suggested), - but I don't really understand how that solves Kaleidoscope. I wonder that PIP might work and if the pics can be rotated, that would be a suitable effect - perhaps.
Currently I use v10 and v12 and have been impressed with HitFilms' direct-offerings which appear to follow Vegas look-and-feel, so that makes a good start.

Since SMS /VegasPro software has the ability to use Presets - why not exploit them? It would save other users a lot of time if there was a "Preview" facility, so the most-suitable can be downloaded for use.

This is a rather old post, so disgruntaledaswell has probably moved on as well, but Mirror might be able to produce the kaleidoscope effect he wanted... if he can figure out how the darn thing works.

When I first started using Vegas, I was surprised to discover that what I would call Mirror was actually buried in the pan/crop effect, and that mirror was something wild akin to kaleidoscope or a fun-house effect.

It's like video noise reduction. Have you discovered where that one is hidden?

As to the Preset Manager, Sony is the only company I've ever encountered that goes to such great lengths to stiff its users by hiding features and working overtime to prevent third parties and users from developing add-ons. You would think that a preset manager and marker manager would be built into Movie Studio and Vegas! At least things have gotten a little better now that OFX plug-ins are now allowed in Movie Studio.

Where would Photoshop be if Adobe had not allowed their users to develop and distribute the thousands of presets and scripts available????
