Keep Audio; Replace sections of Video

Hey All,

First. Thank you so much for all of your help in my previous threads. Your help has made things much easier when it comes to a newbie at video editing.

Now I have another problem (at least for me).

I have grasped the concept of ungrouping video from audio as well as Spliting. However, this is what I want to do and I can't figure out how to do it.

I have a copy of a Diving Safety video on DVD. It was dubbed from an old VHS tape. Some of the scenes are either washed out or the Tracking is bad.

What I want to do is keep the audio (it is fine) and just delete portions of the video and replace them with cleaner clips/images.

For example: In one portion of the video, the narrator is talking about Reef Dynamics and is referring to a chart showing the tide cycles in a reef. However, the video is so washed out, the chart is just a white"frame" on the video. I want to insert a new chart image and keep the narration.

When I use the Split command, both the Video and Audio splits. Is there anyway to just split one or the other and not both?

As always,

Thanks

You first ungroup, then select the video clip, and then you split.

Really you don't even need to split for this at all. Simply place the replacement video/image on a track above the original video. That's it, that's all you need to do.

As Kelly says, just 'cover it up' with your new chart.

Vegas looks 'from the top down'. It will see only what is on the top track unless it is resized smaller or opacity is decreased. It can then 'see' to the next track and so on. This is not true for the audio tracks. They are additive which is important to remember in keeping your overall level below distortion.
