Keeping Track of Images

AlanC wrote on 8/25/2008, 9:19 AM
I create quite a few photo slide shows using Vegas 6d but when I have a hundred or more images in the Media Pool I find it hard to keep track of what images I have already placed on the timeline. Is there a simple way of indicating which images have been used or which haven't been used other than writing the filename onto a sheet as I use it?

yes. in the media pool it says "media count". That's how many times it's been used. for audio+video in the same file, it's 1 use for the video, 1 for the audio, so if you use both A+V it's 2 uses.

It doesn't give that information in my media pool. Is that new in Vegas 7 or 8?

sorry, project media.

Ah. I see it now if I select 'Detailed View'. I was hoping for something similar in 'Thumbnail View'

You have to change the Media Pool/Project Media to "Detailed View" in order to use the Use Count.

There must be a bug in the 'Detailed View - Use Count' Some of the filenames have a zero against them even though I am 100% certain that they are on the timeline.

May be a 'subclip' issue

If you right click media in the MP > select timeline events. It will highlight each instance of said clip in the timeline.

What about Edit Details?
Choosing Show: Events & All fields will show you not only how many times an image was used but where it is on the timeline.

That works but it's a fairly laborious way of determining if a clip has been used.

What about Edit Details?

I don't see that option. Was it in Vegas 6?

Alan, Edit Details is in Vegas 6.
It's a dockable window and is an option under the View menu.

Thanks Mike, I've found it now.

I suppose I was hoping that there would be a way of indicating this in the thumbnail view. I'm not particularly interested in how many times a clip has been used, just whether it's been used or not. Something like adding a tick/check to the filename if it's been used already.

Submit that as a feature request- add a tick mark to media icons if the media has been used on the timeline.

That sort of hint could show in all views of the project media window.

Alan, you could always use a script that adds all unused media to a new track. Then you could quickly see what pieces were unused. Of course they'll then all show as "used" because they'll be on the "unused" track. I know Excalibur has this functionality and believe Ultimate S does as well.

Thanks Edward, I actually already experimented with placing all images onto a lower track then dragging them onto the 'active' track when I wanted to use them. Quite a positive way of keeping track of what's used and what isn't but still a bit too laborious.

Edit: I like Rob's idea but I only do this for a hobby and have no need or intention to upgrade to V7, 8 or even 9. Is it possible to add this feature to existing versions using a script?

Scripts can't change the Project Media or any other docked windows. My script suggestion was just to show you which ones still were not used. You could then use a few of them, delete that track, and then run the script again to see which ones were still not used.

Thanks again Edward. I'll have to apply a little lateral thinking to this.
