On VMS11, one way is to add another video track on top of the "Text" track and then add a text event to it that starts and ends with the underlying event. You can then add your single letter (making sure the background is transparent). In the "Location" section of the text generator, click on the crosshairs, then use the arrow or ctrl+arrow key to nudge the letter into place.
FWIW I think Vegas is fab. and I like the "Show Me How" - surely Sony should get an Award for that?
However, Text is an issue - those ShowMeHow boxes are far too small to read + the tutorial is made difficult if you can't readit. Make them twice the size - by removing all the "padding" - the box size is OK but I'd prefer a Keyboard shortcut to a fade-out frame (there is no whacky video being processed, is there?), then you can swap between a large screen of big text and the underlying VS program. (maybe even for Pro, too). Using the mouse-wheel would be a nice touch as you fade between screens instead of scroling. (e.g. ALT+Scroll).
KERNING Vegas Studio
Yes I agree, it must be done on one TEXT frame,
I suspect VS never wanted to be good at Titles - I understand the Pro-Titler in v11 is pretty flexible and "live" on the Preview screen - does this not do it for you?
If Not:-
Indeed a "Kern for all Caps" might be a good check-box feature (You read it here first).
Another method is to put in coloured stops (US=period), coloured "dotters" for their "space-value" eg Red,2 is small, Blue6 is larger (follow International Colour Code, please!) - by inserting these you can Kern-away . . only they don't show in the Render (=converted to transparent?). If VS was really clever, values below Yellow4 would be "negative" (=smaller gap)...neat, huh?
Five Yellow4 make One space. But you are allowed ONLY one "dotter" between characters, or spaces! -You have been warned! (Sony, I'd like a "reward" for this idea, please.)see below for values.
I find VS is pretty poor at titles, but then that makes the Movie look "better" - don't make Your Titles too good!
KERN codes:
Negative: brown, - red,- orange - - - - Yellow + Green + Blue + Mauve: Positive
brown would make characters touch, as used in some languages
Mauve would be 1.5 spaces (I've omitted a Space equiv).
You really need a magnified preview showing the effect (maybe just 10-characters wide, processed in real-time?), only then can you be sure of the proportions. A grid would be nice, showing the line above and below......did I mention Superscript?
