Keyframe interpolation

malcolm-sutherland wrote on 2/21/2022, 6:00 AM

While panning an event on my timeline (not the track), I am having trouble getting the type of "camera" movement needed. The camera should begin the shot already moving at a steady pace (linear?) And then ease into a resting position (smooth?). I feel like I've tried every combination of keyframe types and am unable to get this simple result. What am I missing? Thanks for any help!

Assuming that you are referring to the keyframing options (R click on a node) in pan/crop on a video event on the timeline, the differences between the options have always been very subtle. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between linear and smooth.

Yes, I am talking about the keyframe options in a pan / crop on a video event in the timeline. I am a 2d animator by trade so I have a trained eye for easing in and out, I can see the difference.

The problem is, If I start with a soften keyframe I get an ease out at the beginning, but I need to start with continuous linear movement. But If I start with a linear keyframe it doesn't seem to matter what the second keyframe is, it will always end the movement as if on a linear curve.

What combination of keyframe types do you recommend for a linear > ease in type of movement?

Afaik, the curve settings linear, smooth, fast slow etc. for a keyframe start at the keyframe and end at the next keyframe. For the setting of other/own curves like start linear and end with ease-in you should go to Curves view instead of Lanes view and change curves by attached handles (right click keyframe and choose manual).

Thanks 3Point! That makes sense. I am in v15, is manual curves a newer feature?

@malcolm-sutherland If you want a fast start and a smooth finish the start key frame interpolation should be set to Fast.
