One way is to place a Marker in the timeline where you want to add the keyframe in the text event. Then double click on the text event and drag the top right yellow triangle of the text event loop selection to the left to snap to the Marker. Now look at the time displayed in the Duration window above the main preview window. Now go to the text media window timeline and drag it's cursor to that time which will show in the lower right corner dislay and add the new keyframe. The text events will always start at zero time to whatever length you make it.

Most of the time I just slap keyframes in anywhere and then drag them around to what I need after a preview.

yes that works - thanks - I just don't understand why this works differently than keyframing any other effect

Yup! - And neither do I .. . . Read a piece this week it has to do with there NOT being timecode? Lame . . . That greyed-out cursor is a real "come-on" - luv it!
