How about regular markers? Insert / Marker, or just press M.

Yes, that is what i have always used. Great for marking spots on timeline and for DVD chapters. But, I want to mark/tag files so as i drag them around the timeline they keep their name...so to speak. Thanks!

Hi jbond,

Try this: select the file on the timeline, hit F2. Type the new name and hit Enter. It helps if you have Active Take Information enabled (Ctrl+Shift+I). This doesn't rename the file, but rather changes the Take name of the event. (Same as Right-click event, choose Take, Rename active.)

Right click the clip on the video.
Change the PROPERTIES to the new name of the clip.

You can change the PROPERTIES name on either the audio or video.
Vegas will still remember the original name of the footage for you, as well.

You will also want to click VIEW>ACTIVE TAKE INFORMATION to see this info on the timeline.

I think we're all interpreting the question differently, so here's my response: load the file into the trimmer, place the playback cursor at the point you want to mark, then press M (for marker). This will embed a marker at the media level, so wherever you use that media on the timeline, you will get a little marker line (and label) at that media offset within the event.

What you want, sounds like you need to use Media Markers.

Depending on the media type you're using, and if it support Media Markers, you can open your media in the Trimmer window, and from the Trimmer window add labeled markers. These markers are saved with the media, and maintain their relative position in the media when the media is placed on the timeline and moved around on the timeline.

I know that .WMV video files support media markers. I'm not sure about the others.
