LaCie Porche Drives

I've got about 5 out of 10 drives that tend to fail repeatedly. They'll work for a few days then one day "poof" - I get an error that the data is corruputed and unreadable. Reformat the drive and all is well for a short time again. I purchased these for a school and we're sitting in doo doo since the drives keep dumping the students work.

I use a LaCie Porche myself and have never had a problem with it. I also have 3 ADS datatanks that I swap drives in as well. Never a problem.

Has anyone experienced problems with the LaCie Porche drives? Anything like this. I've run these drives on both some Dell (I know.. don't start.. ) and some Shuttle systems.. same problems. I've swapped out firewire cards and still nothing.

any suggestions?

Funny you should ask....I got a LaCie Porsche 500 just a couple weeks ago, it's already giving me troubles. I took the drive out, dropped it into an ADS tank, and the drive is fine. Something in the Lacie controller, I guess. ADS cases are ugly, but they just work.

I buy my enclosures from vantec (http://www.vantecusa.com/).

Cheap and they work great, haven't failed for years. I just bought their 2.5" enclosure and popped a 60 gig seagate hard drive in it, works flawlessly and it's bus powered.

Is anyone getting these particlular errors.. since I'd have to get full $$$ back to buy Datatanks.. i can't pull the drives.... have to either return for refund or let LaCie fix....

ADS from here on out though.. paid my dues.

I wouldn't be too hasty about going for ADS. I've have two cases fail over the past 3 years and have just retired another. Using Maxtor now without a hitch.

And ADS didn't replace them immediately? I've had 2 fail out of roughly 60, plus 3 Firewire RAIDS from them. Both were immediately replaced. They did have a batch of bad controllers a couple years back too.

Funny... it's the opposite for me.
I had 2 ADS Dual Link Enclosures that kept giving me trouble for a year, every hard drive I installed would click like crazy (Maxtor, WD even Seagate) and render it useless. So I tried the Lacie's and all 3 250GB Lacie Porche Drives which has been working like a charm for months now. Never had a problem with them. I won't touch another ADS again.
