I just use a laptop with the free HDVSplit software for recording HDV direct to disk from my Sony FX1. HDVSplit works well with any current model (as long as you don't use live preview). You don't need a particularly fast processor or drive.

A laptop is only suitable for recording at fixed locations, but that's a lot of what I do. None of the standalone hard-drive recorders are attractive right now from a price/performance point of view, and the reviews I've seen mention some operational problems.

I've tried reco'rding to a laptop just to prove that I can do it, but haven't had a need to do it for real--yet. I'm planning to buy one of those 15' Firewire extender cables anyway, just to be ready.
