Search came up wiyh this thread, http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=243880 , from Jan. 2004, and is what I want to do, transfer video from one to the other. Can I connect directly with firewire cable, or must I use a router or switch. Both PC's are wireless and to slow. Will a crossover CAT cable be better?USB 2.0? or firewire? Any updated suggestions, Thanks, John.

You'll need a firewire networking software such as that offered by Unibrain or others, but you can also use a Cat5 crossorver cable. I've never checked the speed of firewire vs ethernet cable, we use a giganet, but I'd assume Firewire would be faster than a 100 MBps system.

...and at $20.00 for 2 licenses, I'll give it a try. Thanks Spot. John.

I've used Windows XP's built-in networking to transfer files from a laptop to a desktop - no problem. The speed is quicker than standard ethernet, too. I didn't do any comparative speed measurments, but I was able to edit a whole wedding video with files on the desktop (older Athlon 800) using my laptop from work (a 2.8 GHz P4). No problems, except for a slight lag in showing video in the preview window once in a while.

The Unibrain software does have its benefits, but if it's just a simple file transfer you're after, Windows XP can handle it with no problem.

Firewire to firewire works good for me (though it is PC to MAC). Read this thread and I think you'll be all set:

You have to assign IP address to firewire on each port. Reasonably straight forward. Doing to MAC was a bit more complicated that I think XP to XP would be.
