Large file too slow

I converted dvd to mpg and now I have to edit it in VMS. It ended up being 12 GB. When I edit it in VMS it takes for ever. Its choppy and freezes takes forever to reload.. I have a Dual core processor with 2 gb ram. I never had an issue before , but I am asumming its because its 12 gb. Any suggestions on making it run smoother ? Any software to convert the dvd to a different format that will be better to use ? Thanks

Right from within Vegas Studio you could render the MPEG file to DV .avi. It will end up being substantially larger, around 13GB/hour of video. However, the resulting .avi file should edit much faster and smoother.
