I have an MX1000 mouse by logitech. I like it a lot. I bought it more because it had lots of buttons than because it was laser... It's pretty accurate.

I've got a Logitech LX300 duo, which has a cordless optical mouse, and I observed the same thing - that it seemed rather inaccurate. Then I realized that the grain on my wooden desk was probably throwing off the "tracking" of the mouse. I put a pad of paper under it, and the difference was amazing.

I don't know what the details of your situation are, but it may be worth a try...

Definately check the surface you are working on. While laser mouses are less sensitive the surface you still need something quite uniform.

I've used cheap $5 optical mice for a while. I got (for christmas) a Razer Copperhead which is excelent. Goes between 400 & 2k DPI & 125-1000hz polling rate. absolutly love it... can even change DPI on the fly with a push of the button to make things more accurate...

I've had the jumping issue with it but noone else has ever reported that with this mouse (and I know many people who have it & have used it on other computers with no issues) but I belive it's my PC, not the mouse. I just haven't reformated to fix it.

I have the cordless Microsoft 6000 laser mouse, and it works great. You just have to have the receiver about a 2' away, or less is even better, and it will work just fine. It's got a couple programmable buttons on it that makes things easier.

Frenchy, I think that did the trick! I stuck a piece of white paper over the mouse pad and suddenly my optical mouse works great. I might still investigate other mouse options, though.

Thanks.

I had problems with my optical mouse using a dark (mostly black) mousepad. Switched out for a lighter color pad and viola!

If I move my Logitech - not a Laser mouse - over my wood-grained work area, my cordless goes berserk!

Now using a sheet of A4 paper - doubles up as a notepad while working.

Been looking for a combined Notepad/Wrist-Rest/Mouse mat for at least 5 years now.

I've got a thingy made by Verbatim that's a wrist rest / mouse pad, made of black foam and works. Sorry no notepad functionality.
I think 3M make a similar one with a gel filled wrist rest.

Yeah, seen them .. nice .. But a notepad DOODLE thingy would go down well with me .. being the messy editor that I am! I've got bits of paper and a stack of coloured pens and crayons on my left and my tatty sheet of A4 that my rodent slides over .. this does seem a natural for Office/PC World or Paper Kingdom or Stationery Cosmos!! ( I made up the last 2!)
