I'd watch the displacement map FX on the short clips. I found it visually distracting or else fade it down so the FX resolves into a stable image before the cut. It the moment it just looks something you did cause you could.
Apart from that it's great.

I really enjoyed it. Nice job. Two quick questions:

1. How did you get the "screen door" effect? Did you actually take a picture of a screen and overlay it?

2. How did you do the duotones? Is that an effect that is part of one of the Vegas fX, or did you first go to B&W and then change the black to some color?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Farse, hoping not to sound defensive, the " displacement " is part of the TV Simulator FX, tweaked a bit but meant to simulate the TV's that are on the set. I think some things also dont translate as well when shrunk to internet proportions as opposed to being seen on a real deal television.

Depending on the song and goal I do tend to make quick cuts which some aren't fond of. For myself, it can add a degree of energy and I like to think a touch of curiosity. By that I mean that ( hopefully ) someone might want to watch it again just to catch something they might have missed the first go, I'll grant that I may be totally off the mark in my take on the matter but thats part of my thought process. Really hope I don't sound defensive in all that but felt the need to clarify.

John, as ya might have guessed by the above the " screen door " is just the tweaked " TV Simulator ". And you are correct, its two effects, the first " Black & White " at 100% and followed by " Gradient Map " with various settings. Good call !

WOW.. very much worth the look.... the "song" was great and I DID find myself watching it several times to see some of the "frames" that seemed rather peculiar and disturbing the first time around (I still don;t know what some of them are!). I find it helps to run it in full screen.

Grazie (and I hope this is not a problem for "Muttley") but this is the link (19.6MB) to download the video from their site directly....(right-click - Save As). I sometimes find the code on a page to embed the player does not always work in every instance... so as the video on Mutleys site is "downloadable" (and not just streaming)... this may be better for you.

Of course do check out the site from the links posted above as well!

Ah, OK. The wobbly TV FX!

I think you're right, it doesn't translate that well, I'd have to look at it again but I don't recall there being enough visual cues to set it as such. Maybe a 'TV' style border and / or some flicker would do the trick .

You see you know what you want it to look like, that's always the value I find of leaving something for a week or two and then going back to it. Also the advantage of getting others who have no history with it to look at it. Of course here we have the reverse problem, we're looking at it work out which FX you used rather than what it achieved!

As that's what you're after then my comment about having it resolve into a steady shot isn't applicable of course..

Mutts, don't think so . .I was able to see the C&W Flames thingy? That was yours wasn't it?

L-V downloading directly from "Muttley's" site now

. . . hey ho . .

I enjoyed the clip, Ray, but I'm afraid I can't watch the "wavy" effect without shuddering.

I've spent the whole afternoon trying to get rid of a similar unwanted effect from a project - something to do with interlacing - haven't tracked it down yet ....

Wow! Mutts!!!

Powerful song . . very handsome lead singer . .. singing about really nasty things . .. . yeah complacency IS quite corrosive . . . I must remember to film some stuff that is contradictory from the here and now . . . there must be plenty of it about ? . . Yer know the things that "seem" to be "Right-On!" but just aint ? Can you think of any? . . . Nice to see good ole Adolf getting a showing . . Now where would we be without that Icon of Evil?

As I say, Ray, powerful and now, for me very .. .er . . quite thought provoking . . . and the lead singer is very handsome too!

. .. not to make believe away our lives . . oh yes . . . oh . . yes . . .

Grazie

. . ps looks like you got rid of the"Blemish-Pixies" on the STAR flares?

I must have listend to the song about 30 times already... I'm hooked. Where can I buy me the real thing! (gotta support the artist you know).

Somehow this song resonates with me very much... I guess something to do with my own personal journeys to Iran... and possible one to Iraq on the horizon.

Above all else I'm happy to hear that people like the song and the artist, after all, that is kind of the purpose of a music video isn't it ? To expose people to the artist/band right ? So good stuff.

Ryan is a great guy and an amazing singer/songwriter, and for anyone in the Austin area who might be interested, the premiere for the video and his first real gig with his new band will be on October 8th at The Copper Tank. Don't have a time yet but cut me an email and I'll keep ya updated. Would love it if anyone from here could make it.

Anyone interested in purchasing his CD, he does have it for sale on CD Baby and for a guy like this, every sale means something :

And not that its much different, but I inadvertently squeezed and posted the last version of the edit. As there is so much going on I doubt many would notice the few clips that were swapped out anyway, but I am re-compressing with Sorenson as I type and will get them started uploading as soon as they're done.

And Liam, no worries about the direct link for those who need it, appreciate you taking the time to put it up.

So who has the MTV hookup ? =P

Thanks again all !

Was any shot with your xl2 (jealous) if so , how did it match up with the xl1

I enjoyed the video, well done.

have to ask,,,Is that a steelers helmet tattoo on his left shoulder in texas

WOW! This should be on MTV! Looked professional to me. Music and performance are very appealing. By way of suggestion, the video left me wanting to see a little more of the performers especially toward the end when the vocalist was getting into the song emotionally. This is the most classy vid I've seen in a long time. Great work!

Looked great to me. OT: I really like the way you are presenting it on your site. I would like to be able to do some home movies that way for my own site. I'm speaking mainly of the embedded movie on the webpage. I'd like to be able to document recording my next project to show via my site.

How can I learn how to do this? Can anyone point me a direction?

Thanks,

Thomas

Great to hear all.

Only the few clips at the beginning of the band on and walking off the plane were shot on the XL2. Matched up pretty well as I shot it in 30p. Also, since its a different environment than most of the video any difference is really imperceptible.

And no, its not a Steelers helmet ! lol, its a phoenix rising from the flames.

thomaskay, to tell you the truth I'm not sure how I did the embedding ! It was kinda tricky ( for me anyway ) and took a bit of homework on the web. Though I built the site, I'm not a " web guy ". But now I just recycle the old pages when there's a new vid, changing the old path and parameters. Wish I could give ya more insight.

Thomaskay,
Getting the code is easy but you will need to learn how to set up a web page/site for it to do you any good. Recommend you take a course in web design that teaches you how to code using HTML. This is not hard to learn. Basically, you just need to learn the syntax and symbols to make it work. My son can help you though this if you want to e-mail him at coltons@hawaii.rr.com. Also, you can visit our home web site at http://www.cr-home-videos.com, go to the Samples page, view source (view at the top of the page and click on source), and copy the code we are using. Feel free to check out our videos there also. There's a couple good surfing shows, one of which shows some 60 footers at JAWS in Maui. Good luck.

And just by the by, if you saw the version early that was the wrong version, not the final edit. Same vid, but just a bit more flushed out with minor changes and a couple short scenes adds:

Ryan Desiato - Make Believe

Not to much anyone other than myself would notice, but was going to have to get the "real" one up there soon or later anyways.Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thank !

Muttley; I really liked your video. Very professional looking, fun to watch and entertaining. How did you do the revolving shots around the band? Steady Cam? Dolly? I would like to know. Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!
MUTTLEY wrote on 9/25/2004, 2:20 PM

Thanks mvp, was actually a crane ( jib ) on a tripod tied down in the back of a pickup truck. Was pleasantly surprised at how well those shots turned out as I was sitting on the tailgate of the truck holding onto the truck with one hand and working the camera with the other. The majority of the time the viewfinder was a good three feet away so all I could do was just see enough to tell if the band or singer was in the shot. On top of all that the camera was on auto focus but surprisingly performed remarkably well.
