LAYER BREAK

Can anybody help me on this one?

I have the DVD Archietect 3.0 which came with Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum Version. I spent nearly 12 hours rendering a project for a double layer DVD when an error message pops up that says the software couldn't find a decent break.

The message said for me to insert a chapter marker at some point in the video file. I placed the marker as it asked and even renamed it, but I am still getting the same error message, and what's worse is that I can't continue if it doesn't see that marker. Is there anything that I can do to get the project done?

If you have more than one title in the project you can try re-arranging the titles in the project overview window to see if that helps.

You may also want to download the 3.0a version of DVDAS - while this isn't listed as a known bug that was fixed, it can't hurt to be running the latest version.

And if all else fails, go to www.vso-software.fr and download their free trial of CopyToDVD - then in DVDAS, options/preferences, select the Burning tab and change the "space available on media" to 8.5GB - this should let DVDAS prepare the project at which point you can use CopyToDVD to do the actual burn and let it insert the layer break.

I got in a tangled loop trying to set this in DVDA for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and just gave up. I simple rendered the project to DVD, then burnt it in Nero. Nero automatically set a switch point that I have not been been able to detect so far, so the end result was fine. I trust Nero more for the burning end of things (in PAL) anyway.

I've never tried it, but according to the docs you are supposed to have the ability to choose where the break occurs. Did that not work for you? Maybe that feature is only available in the full version.

See the doc topic titled "Burning your prepared project". It says that a "Choose Layer Break Behavior" dialogue is supposed to be displayed in the burn wizard if you have declared the disc is dual layer. You have the option of letting it try to figure it out, or explicitly picking the break point, or explicitly picking the break only if it doesn't find a likely title end/start.

I have burned many DL disks with DVDA3. DVDA3 gives you the option to choose the layer break or automatically choose. If you choose to select the layer break DVDA3 will list the times for the location candidate layer breaks. Breaks can occur between titles and at chapter points. If DVDA3 can not find any candidate layer break DVDA3 wil give you a time range where you can add a chapter point. You can sometimes juggle your titles to get a candididate layer break. Don't fill the DL too full. DVDA3 has to shift the image to align the candidate layer break with the DL layer break. If you fill the disk too full there may not be any candidate layer breaks.

Did you re-prepare the project after adding the chapter mark? (If you use the 'Smart Prepare' function both times, it should only have to reprocess the one title you added the chapter to.)
