Layman question regarding MPEG elementary streams

DVD Architect's manual reads: "MPEG elementary streams are not supported. Even if you plan to replace the audio with PCM or AC-3, you will need to import muxed MPEG files."

My questions are:
1. What are ""MPEG elementary streams"? (vs. MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files?)
2. What are "muxed MPEG files"? (vs. "non-muxed MPEG files?)

A URL or a short answer here that explains the above would be highly appreciated.

Elementary streams are seperated Video and Audio streams. They often have .mpv/.mpa or .m2v/.m2a extensions to differentiate between the video and audio elements. Muxed (or Multi-plexed) mpeg files are those that contain both the video and audio together. Some programs prefer to work with elementary streams (DVD Lab, for instance) and do their own multiplexing, others do not.

If you need to create elementary streams, you can do so by customising one of the DVD output templates. One of the tabs has a checkbox to create them.
