licensing and multiple computers....

allank44 wrote on 6/6/2012, 12:08 PM
have installed my licensed copy of Vegas 11.0 on 2 computers. I have registered both computers and have attempted to take an edit file from one computer to another in order to edit in 2 locations.

I have the exact same media files in both locations and have been able to easily relocate the files so the edit is intact.

The result is the edit is fully enabled at computer "A" but when brought back to computer "B" the file name shows "VEGAS 11.0 TRIAL" and I'm unable to save any changes made to the edit . I do, however, seem to be able to render the file out....just can't save any changes.

I was under the impression I could work on up to three computers as per info on this site...although there seems to be some confusion here.

Is this a licensing issue??

You can install on as many as you want (that you own) just use one at a time. Your problem has nothing to do with your project, something is wrong with the registration, it needs to be properly registered with Sony.

that's the thing...I have registered both computers and copies of Vegas.

So...still the same results.

I've tried questioning Sony support and still no response from there, either...after a week of waiting.

Tech support or Customer Service?

It's ACTIVATION that you need,

When I had this problem, I contacted customer service who got back to me within the day and 'reset' the activation.
allank44 wrote on 6/14/2012, 1:19 PM
okay...said registration but should have said activation....

Anyhoo...rechecking everything and will try again.

Here's what happens:

I complete and save a edit on the work computer. I render out the finished file.

I bring it home on a flash card and copy it to the home computer hard drive.

NOTE I am not even trying to bring the VEGAS .veg file home now.
I'm only bringing home the rendered file.

I now import this finished file into a new Vegas project.

I do further editing. I save this new edit...

This time it seems I can save the edit, so great.

BUT..the file type shows as VEGAS 11 TRIAL.

This may not be affecting anything but it seems weird.

My hope was to be able to bring home the .veg file..locate the media files which are resident in both locations and continue to edit.

I have registered and activated the software on both computers.

Any one else out there do the home/work computer workflow??

as for who did I question..it was support...

The question is still sitting in the "my support" area and I did receive an email indicating receipt and a reference number.

By file type, are you referring to the Windows Associate file type?

You can change this within Windows.

"I complete and save a edit on the work computer. I render out the finished file.

This is probably the wrong workflow. If you have a copy of the original media on both computers, all that you need to walk between the computers is the veg file.

What do you mean "File Type" ?

A VEG is a VEG and a WAV is a WAV. Sounds like your WIndows has somehow got something screwed up in the File Association naming department.

When you look in the file folder...this is with Windows 7...you see the headings

"name", "date", "file", "size".

Under the heading "file" I see VEGAS PRO 11.0 TRIAL

This only happens when I transfer .veg files in either direction..home to work or work to home.

It also happens even when I bring home a rendered file....import it into VEGAS and then save the VEGAS project.

The result in either case is VEGAS PRO 11.0 TRIAL.

it's not what I want to do. I want to take the .veg file back and forth...

When I save the .veg file when it's transferred, it's displayed in the file folder as

"VEGAS PRO 11.0 TRIAL"

and will not let me save changes.

What happens if you take a .veg file over to a computer that does not have Vegas installed on it ? How does it show the file ? The only way Explorer can report it as a "Vegas 10 Trial" type file is if somehow the association in the registry is getting set to that. Or are you referring to how the file shows inside of Vegas is where you see the "Trial" information ? Explorer only knows what file types are by what has been set up in the registry - I can tell it a .hpd file is a "Humpty Dumpty" type file with a registry key and it would report it that way.

Make sure you are seeing the file types in Explorer:
