There are a few ways, but the best/simplest is Boris (Red or Graffiti).
Otherwise, the first thing that comes to mind would be to put your text on two tracks; have one much brighter than the other or apply Glow to that track/event. Diagnal wipe between the two. I haven't tried that (I own BorisRed), but it SEEMS like it would work.

The Light Rays FX is actually very nice for this effect

Yes, add Light Rays, and they use keyframing to get the motion you want.

I thought he was looking for a lightsweep... Rays are different, right? Or can Rays do a similar effect to a sweep??
I'm still a'learnin' Vegas.

Check out the VEG files at Sundance. There are a load of examples that create text effects with light that moves across the titles -- several dozen examples, in fact. Here is the link:

Sundance

Use the list box at the top of the screen that is labeled "Any Category" and change it to "Text Effect" so you can view just the text effect examples.

One of the first examples you will see is called "Fancy Titles." I think it will get you pretty excited. Keep going, though. You will find lots more. There are some amazingly creative people out there, especially when it comes to creating titles in Vegas (it is not intuitively obvious, as we used to say in math class).

I just placed two examples on Sundance (Spotlight across text) using both the Lens Flare and Light rays. It takes a day or so for them to post it but it should be available soon.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Spotlight preset part of the bump map filter. Qucik and simple ready to go spotlight effect you can control with keyframing.

Want to get a little more fancy, use cookie-cutter.

The two examples I put on Sundance are available now.

Hey Billyboy, I have really enjoyed your tutorials. Could you possibly do one that shows the spotlight for the text using the bump map fx with spotlight. I worked with that a little and never achieved a good look. If you get a chance take a look at the second Spotlight across text on Sundance that I created and let me know what you think.

I'll add it to my request list. :-)

When I have a few spare minutes I've been working on my new web site which is going to be all Flash. So I want to at least get as far as I was on the old site converted first.
