Link Button to Chapter in DVDA 5.0-Broken Link

mikesteven wrote on 3/9/2013, 8:11 PM
I inserted a chapter marker in the timeline in DVDA 5.0. I then created an emtpy button on my menu page. I want to link the empty button to the chapter marker. It doesn't seem to work. When I took at the properties of the button, it says broken link.

I read the help menu on how to fix this but it doesn't work. I renamed the chapter marker to sunny day. It doesn't appear in the properties list so I can select it. Wan you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks,

Mike

Don't insert any navigation buttons.
Insert a scene/chapter marker on the media timeline.
If you've done it correctly, a link is automatically created on the submenu page.

Select the button. Go over to the right to 'Action'. Then, 'Destination'. Click on 'Broken Link'. You should get a drop down list of available chapters to link to.

[SEE BELOW FOR CORRECTION]

It's not that simple, inserting an empty navigation button will link only to other menus, not media chapters.

A navigation button and a scene/chapter link are two entirely different things, and are not interchangeable.

You can link a button to anything that is linkable, chapter or video or another menu or script,. Select the button, select the destination video, select the chapter. You can link it to a specific button on a menu.

I stand corrected.
One can select the media from a blank button, and then the destination chapter, if it already exists.
I learn something new here every day.

This is still convoluted, because inserting a new scene/chapter marker was still necessary in the OP's scenario, and doing so correctly automatically creates that link on the menu page. So it seems counterintuitive to create another "Blank Button" to do the same thing.

I enter my chapters in Vegas and import that with my file. I never create a MENU page using the built in feature of DVDA because I do custom graphics and highligts. So I always have to create the page from scratch and link my custom graphics to the chapters, or enter an empty button and link.

I don't use thumbnails which is why i would rather do it from scratch. My menus are generally text only with a fancy pointer/highlighter.

I don't know about the OP's modus operandi, but if you created his own menu page, chapter's are not added automatically.

I've found it easier to let DVDA create the menu page with all the links from the markered video file, then edit their appearance and placement to suit, including custom thumbnails or graphics. If I need another chapter on the video timeline, I add it and the menu link is added automatically.

With your customized workflow, little wonder you choose to add the buttons and links by hand; I think the only custom buttons I've added were for additional page navigation.

So once again, in a way I think we're both right.

Let's put it this way, Dave.
Over the last decade, you and I have had the most polite, civilized disagreements ever on any forum.
Maybe we could teach Congressmen how to get along . . .

And I work in both ways depending what suits....(Please no cracks re "swinging both ways") LOL. But yes, you sure learn stuff on these forums. :-)

I am still having problems. I have 4 chapter marks in MSP 12. I clicked on make movie which did a render and then opened DVDA. There were no buttons for the chapter markers.

Is there an easy way to just put a button on a menu page and link it to one of the chapter markers?

Hi Mike, if I understand you correctly, you will have put 4 chapters in your DVD which should "skip" to the next chapter using the remote from the DVD player. As they have mentioned, you will have to insert > empty button (Insert being in the upper toolbar) Once you have the empty button on your menu, edit the text to read what it is e.g. "Play All" or "Highlights" etc. Then you will have to select "Action" from the options listed on the right of the window. Click on "Broken Link" then from the "drop down" select the required chapter. Repeat for as many chapters you have.

Hope this helps
