Locking audio to video and using velocity envelopes

I'm trying what I thought would be a simple exercise - a rewinding video with a gentle slowdown at the end of the rewind. Easy enough with the video, I merely applied a velocity envelope with a negative number and tweaked the keyframe points. Problem is, the audio stays normal direction and speed. In fact, applying any kind of velocity envelope to a video track does not affect the audio at all. I solved the immediate dilemma by taking the clip into Sound Forge and manually doing the audio there and then compositing it back to the video track in VV. But there must be a more elegant way within VV itself. What have I missed?

TIA
