Lockups during render

Cooldraft wrote on 4/8/2006, 10:38 AM
I am pretty sure that it is not Vegas 6.0d software, but need a shorctut to finding out where to start troubleshooting on a time crunch. I upgraded my motherboard so I could upgrade to evga 6200 pci express video cards (which did speed vegas tremendously when moving tons of objects-no lag time now!!). 2.5 g ram.

I can work everything (do the complete project in Vegas) but when it comes rendertime, it has locked each time-even when preparing DVDs in DVDA)

See how many running processes you can shut down including virus software (disconnect from the internet). Uninstall Quicktime or Real. Shut down the firewall. Disable as many running processes as Windows XP will allow. Shut down any video or audio running processes.
I use WIndows 98SE (which won't run anything past Vegas 4) and only have Systray and Explorer running.

I have never had lock ups, but in reading past threads from those that do, over-heating was sometimes the cause. When the processor is used 100% for a long period of time, it does consume a lot more power than when it slowed down during periods of inactivity. Can your system report the CPU temperature? I'd look at that.

You can try running the computer with the case cover off to see if it helps.

Wow, my case is currently off. I read that the case needs to be closed for proper airflow. I am putting the side back on right now.

It is the same 939 CPU on a different motherboard. I did not want to reinstall everything so, I did a boot to XP CD, repair, to get the correct drivers installed in XP Pro. I wonder if that has something to do with it. I have never had this happen in Vegas, until the upgrade(addded 1.5 G, 2 GeForce 6200 PCIe, Gigabit Mobo), this is why I am sure it is not the software.

I just reinstalled due to Windows' Half-Life, and just getting it back to the way I like it. But if I have to...

Thanks for the suggestions. More are welcome.

The case needs to be closed for proper airflow from the fans inside the case because with the case off the fans don't have the case cover to keep their airflow directed. However, the fans almost invariably will not cool the inside of the computer as well as taking off the cover/s. The heat dissipation that way is much better than the confined airflow from those fans IMO.

Not that long ago .. actually .. clear as a bell!!

If the fans in your case still can't keep the processor cool, just for a test, take the side of the case off and point a fan directly at it and see if that does the trick. A desk fan works. Games were crashing for me a little while ago and I realized the fan on my processor died! To get me by until the new fan came I just pointed a fan at it and that took care of it.

had a bunch of lockups lately ... disconnected my matrox card + 2 HDs, and it's been rock steady ...

unfortunately my CPU is still running at 76C, way too hot.. I bought the cpu fan someone here recommended, waiting for it from newegg, that red one .. and also ordered a new lian-lee big case w/3 fans, so hopefully that'll help.. got arctic silver + the solvent, hope I can get the old fan off the cpu ok...

in addition to speed fan utility (it's decent), get the asus pc probe utility (google for d/l links)...highly recommended... works great to see temps.. forgot which link I used, here's one though .. don't know if it works on non-asus mobos tho, free, works great: http://www.techspot.com/downloads/265-asus-pc-probe.html

and bought another gig of memory, I'm at 1 gig now, the new 2 should help once I get it installed, to minimize lockups.. and if you're using V5/6, you might want to disable/uninstall mssql/media mgr.
