long render times and best capture card?

Well I figured out from reading this forum for the last few
hours that rendering in Quicktime takes forever. I did a
test project with several codecs in MOV. The first was
rendered using the same settings as my MotDV card 720X480,
29.97 fps in uncompressed DV. Boy was I surprised at how
long it took and the massive file size ( over 1.1 GB for a
25 second clip with 2 fades. Ouch!! Then I rendered it in
MPEG-2. I expected it to take longer because of the
compression, but still over 10 minutes. But I was delighted
with the file size (7.5 MBs). Then I did it in Premiere
5.1c (Native DV). It took only only a 1.5 minutes and came
out with a 64MB file size. I realize that Premiere and
MotoDV compress the DV video. But what a difference in
time. So here are my questions. What is the fastest
rendering codecs to use for printing to tape? I will
experiment with AVI and using the NTSC DV codec. Second, I
realize that I will have a tough time exporting to tape
without another capture card since MotoDV is not a OHCI
card. Does anybody have a recommendation about a card that
isn't buggy? I have used a SIIG card with my current system
before and I got nothing but headaches and eventually sent
it back. That was a few years ago though. The system I am
building will be as follows: AMD 1200 Thunderbird, ASUS
A7V133 KT133A motherboard that does have a VIA KT133A chip,
384MB RAM, Gainward Nvidia Geforce 2 with dual monitor
heads Video Card, Turtlebeach Santa Cruz sound card. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

The SIIG wasn't the problem- it is the Via chipset. There's
info on the Microsoft website about why anything but the
latest Vias have problems with 1394.

If you replace the Via, use a SIIG 1394 card, and render to
the NTSC DV template- you'll get good performance and
excellent picture quality-

Thanks, but I no longer have the SIIG card but I just
ordered the Koutech Card. Should I have any problems with
it?
