Long Renders

I have Vegas Video 5. I am editing together a concert performance that I hope to eventually author to DVD, using DVD Architect 2. I have edited and am rendering the first half, which is aproximately 42 minutes in length. The video files were captured with Veg5 at 720 x 480, .avi format. I am applying the Magic Bullet Movie Looks "War Epic Light" filter to the video. As per the manuals instructions, I am rendering to MPEG 2 format, NTSC DV, 720 x 480, 48/16 stereo audio.
I first tried rendering the file overnight, but awoke to find it only 37% complete. I cancelled the render and took a look at what I had. Looked and sounded great! I soloed the audio track and rendered it, hoping to free up resouces from the Waves RComp and L2 plug-ins I was using. I then replaced the audio and removed the plug-ins. I also turned off the Video Preview window.
I then retried the render, which showed me that it would still be whopping 12 hours. Fine, this was a very rare time where I could get along without the computer for that long, so I let it run. Checking back twelve hours later, I witnessed the counter go from 1 minute left to 22 hours left! No freakin' WAY!! Still, bolstered by the promise of that final products results so far, I let it ride. I currently have 9.5 hours left on the render (I hope), but this seems entirely too excessive. I have a 3.2 gig P4 with 1 Gig of RAM and 35 Gigs of available disk space. Can this be normal?

It sounds very normal. Movie Looks is a slow plugin so that is multiplying your render time by a substantial factor.

You do not need to leave your computer alone during this time. I usually set Vegas' priority to "below normal" while rendering and let it run in the background, then continue using my computer for whatever other things i usually do. It may add a small amount of time to the render process, but not much at all.

Don't use Movie Looks. It simply sucks. I mean, it's an awesome plugin... IF IT DIDN'T TAKE SO FREE-KIN LONG TO RENDER! Just use a combo of 'Glow' and 'Gradient Map' to accomplish some of the color treatments. It should come close to what you see on 'movie looks', in much less of a render time.
