looking at a used DM-50

I have an HV30, and I really need an external mic. I've gone back and forth, trying to decide whether to buy a Canon DM-50 or one of the Rode mics. I've read the threads here, but I'm just as confused as before.

I don't shoot much, just family and our dogs, and sometimes shoot video at our Scout campouts and meetings.

While looking around again, I've found a used DM-50 at a decent price, but the salesman thinks it doesn't have the original foam covers. I don't mind buying a Rycote Windjammer to use with it, but I have no idea of the impact of not having those original foam covers.

Anyone know whether it's ok to not have those? I imagine I'd take the windjammer off when indoors?

Thanks.

I'd go for it. The factory foam missing is not a big deal. Even going
down to local fabric store and buying fake fur to be sewn into a windjammer
will make you happy with the results in wind.

Thanks. I called them back, and they now say they do have the foam, but even if they don't, your idea's a good one, so I went ahead and ordered it.

I have no idea how good the DM-50 is, and whether another would have been better, but I'm sure it's better than my built-in mic. And I definitely like the idea of the windjammer.

Thanks again.
