Looking for help on a capture problem

Long story short--capture that ONCE worked NOW fails. I have been capturing successfully to my 250 GB external firewire drive. All of a sudden my attempts to capture results in mosaic pattern glitches and a numerous dropped frames. I have no problems editing, rendering, or previewing to an external monitor from the same drive or copying files to and from--the problem seem to be isolated to capture. I CAN capture to drive C: flawlessly so I thinks that rules out software on perhaps a bad firewire cable. All background functions suh as Norton Auto Protect, etc. are disabled before I attempt to capture. Any suggestion appreciated.
PS: I also reloaded Vegas as well--same results.

I have what sounds like the same problem occasionally. When it happens the clip properties show fps and audio bit depth wrong. I believe it occurs when the capture has backed up passed the beginning of the scene and confuses the readings. I have succesfully avoided this by making sure my capture starts further into the segment.
