looking for recommendations for new system...

Does anyone have any opinions about motherboards and RAM? I
would like to build a new system with a PIII 933 and I keep
reading conflicting info about the RDRAM, PC133 RAM and DDR
SDRAM... Also, whether to get the i815E MB or the i820 or
stick with good ole se440bx... Ugh - so many choices. Does
anyone have any real-world experience having put one of
these systems together recently? I'm not interested in AMD,
BTW...

Thanks in advance.

Charles.

I can only add a question:
anyone experienced with dual-processors?
thanks for recommendations
Walter

Hi Walterius:
I have a Dual PIII 550 MHz system that I use for mixing
projects. I use the Digital Audio Card Deluxe audio card
(excellent sound quality - as good or better than multi-thousand
dollard stand-alone converter boxes - I know I've measured them
all with an AP test system).
I've had minor problems that I associate with the drivers with
the sound card (sounds great, but drivers are so-so).
Vegas works seamlessly with the dual-processor system.
I can have 10-15 real-time effects running on the FX busses which
include high quality reverbs that take up a lot of cycles (this
doesn't include the track effects - I have 30-40 tracks all with
effects running as well).
I highly recommend a dual processor system for Vegas.

Hi Charles,

I'm in the process of updating a 440-BX system from PII-350 to PIII-
700, keeping my Tyan S1846S MotherBoard, and 256 Meg of ECC PC100
memory. One little item that "gotcha'd" me was the "retaining
module" that held the PII in place doesn't fit the PIII Coppermine.
I finally found a 'universal retaining module' for $3.00 at Tyan's
online store, after much searching and an initial try at jury-rigging
on the board. Thankfully, I didn't screw anything up.

The reason I chose the S1846S in the first place is that it has
nothing built in, ie audio, scsi, network.

Micro-Xpress still has these boards, but they will probably have old
BIOS rev.

Tyan has great support on web page with instructions on how to flash
the bios, and it does work fine.

I've also added Promise Technology Ultra-66 IDE controller (PCI), and
upgraded IDE drives to ATA-66's 7200.

I debated going with a new mo-bo, but so many of the newer chip sets
have built in stuff, such as graphics card, and so many have built in
audio, which I've found to be a major hassle to disable.

It takes a lot of research between mfr's web sites and seller's web
sites to sort out what's for sale, vs what you want.

Mfr's I've had good luck with . . www.tyan.com,www.supermicro.com
Sellers . . www.microx-press.com, www.cyberbuys.com

Hope this helps . .
Regards,
Rick Z

Well Charles I have a great site for you that shows real benchmarks
for the different types of ram. RDRAM is overpriced for the
performance you get. I just setup a Dual Pentium III667 with a I840
motherboard (which has two 64bit PCI slots). I got this board before
the MTH recall by INtel which has the SDRAM slots instead of RDRAM.
The recall did not cover the I840's but all manufactures stopped
making them with SDRAM support (sad). Intel is releasing a new board
(I815E) which is the replacement for the 440BX chipset and runs
133mhz CPU's.

Here's two sites with great hardware info:
www.tomshardware.com
www.sharkyextreme.com

If you have any questions you can email me.

Later,
John
