Losing audio while capturing vid

Xavion wrote on 5/2/2005, 8:15 AM
What is the best way to capture video in "Vegas 5" USB or DV. I bought a Panasonic GS 150 camcorder and have been successful
in capturing video via USB port. However, I lose the audio.

I noticed there's a DV connection on the camera, should I use this instead of th USB connection are is the lose of audio do to settings
that need to be made in Vegas 5?

You should use the Firewire port whenever possible. This is a true data transfer.

Yes, what Dave said. Firewire is far superior!

Sorry about all of the beginners questions...But does the firewire connect to the back of the PC. Are do I need a special capture card.

Most newer computers come with firewire connections built in. It might be labeled "1394" or "iLink". If you don't have that built in you'll have to buy a card. Most computer stores and even Wal*Mart carry them on the shelves for around $20 or less. You'll probably also have to get a firewire cable. Most cameras have a smaller 4 pin connector and most computers have a larger 6 pin connector, so make sure you get a cable with the correct plugs on it!

Xavion,

Did that work for you? I just bought the same camera, trying to use the USB cable and I'm getting video but no sound.

Here's the wierd thing...when I use the bundled Microsoft Movie Maker, I get video and audio--no problem.

Let me know before I go buy a firewire card and wire.

thanks.

Vegas is a Video for Windows (VfW) application. Capture of video over USB is DirectShow only. The difference is Vegas expects to see a second audio track in the AVI file along with the interleaved video/audio that is DV. This format is called a Type 2 AVI file. The old Microsoft VfW filters create the second audio track but DirectShow doesn't. Microsoft abandoned VfW a few years back, before USB high speed was created. The DirectShow AVIs are called Type 1 AVI files. There are a number of editing software out there, including Windows Movie Maker and Motion Studio DV, that read the Type 1 AVIs no problem.

Thanks, Guy

So you're telling me I need to go buy a Firewire Card and cable, right?

Yes. You'll be better off. Transfer speed is the same. However, you can't print to tape over USB, only Firewire.
